Maureen reads outloud to us a ditti concerning communication....a plea entitled "listen" what does it concern?
WHEN I ASK YOU TO LISTEN TO ME YOU GIVE ME ADVICE

WHEN I ASK YOU TO LISTEN TO ME, YOU TELL ME WHY I SHOULDN'T FEEL THIS WAY

LISTEN, ALL I ASK YOU TO DO IS LISTEN, NOT TALK, JUST LISTEN. I DON'T NEED ADVICE, SO PLEASE HEAR ME, LISTEN TO ME AND I'LL THEN TALK TO YOU
CPHT 23 LATER PART DISCUSSES CHILD COMMUNICATIONS, AGE GROUPS AND PROBLEMS WITH EACH GROUPS. WE WILL MAINLY FOCUS ON ADULTS BUT DON'T FORGET THE ...
CHILD
THE PROFESSIONAL NURSING RELATONSHIP:

NURSE-CLIENT HELPING RELATIONSHIP (THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP) DISCUSS THIS
NEED TO BE THERAPUTIC RELATIONSHIP TO GET INFORMATION TO HELP THE CLIENT

BE NON JUDGEMENTAL...DON'T NEED TO AGREE W/ LIFE STYLE JUST NON JUDGEMENTAL.
THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH A CLIENT ISN'T LIKE WITH A FRIEND. WE ARE NOT JUDGEMENTAL . SO HOW IS A THERAPY RELATIONSHIP DIFFERENT FROM A SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP?
TO GET INFORMTATION TO HELP THE CLIENT. THERE'S A GOAL THERE WHERE SOCIAL HAS A MUTUAL GOAL IN THAT RELATIONSHIP
WHAT ARE SOME ELEMENTS OF PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS?
clear concise statements w/o slang
professional behavior means how you look, what you say, how you say it, appearence is crucial, good grammer, on time, organize, use of names. the patient is mr or mrs or ms unless they say call them by their name NOT HONEY SWEETY!
some nurses are task oriented and will blow by the communication aspect with the client. also they will miss out on what?
messages that clue you in on how they are doing.
Also professional behavior get less law suits.
Studies on patients and how nice or not nice the nurse was has to do with communication skills
first film was about a guy who is going to get a die job to his heart. he tells the nurse that his brother died from a similar procedure 20 years ago. what did the class say about this exchange?
the nurse provided information! about allergic reactions, etc
the nurse showed empathy
he restated what the client said and did a good job
he listened very well
he clarified too.
2nd film lady has diabetes. the nurse doesn't listen to anything the clients' concerns. the nurse isn't very concerned with the client's concerned and is condescending. comments?
nurse changed the subj.
gave personal opinions
didn't provide information
the nurse was given so many opportunities to listen but didn't.
nurse treated her like she had just a cold.
3rd film is a teenager w/ lupus. she's mad and getting madder as she comes to understand her situation.the nurse had huge glasses. comments?
the teacher said you don't ask the question why. you instead rephrase things. if you were interacting w/ that kid at that time? no why? SHE WASN'T LISTENING. teacher thought nurse was condenscending. if you allow them to express that and stay silent it could of made her comfortable. so silence would of been good. let her express herself. but the nurse fired back at her. but she wasn't ready to listen at this point.
next film is about an old man with breathing pneumonia problem, a retired postal worker. cant breath with a full stomach. had to give up his cat. comments?
if a person likes to talk, silence to let the guy talk. just let the person talk by using silence and sharing observations. she clarified for the patient, excellent.
next film, woman has a reoccuring abdomen wound and is concerned about hospital costs. the new wing that costs so much.
nurse got defensive, gave personal opinions.
next patient had something wrong, won't eat...client lied about
the nurse ask too many questions? nurse got to the bottom of it but had to push to get the info.
you need to build a nurse client relationship is what she stressed with these exercises. or your not doing the whole job, doing a C not and A with communicating skills.
she expects use to be able to pick out theraputic from non theraputic and questions on the test (0H43M40S) she discusses the questions on the test...she expects us to be able to PICK OUT THERAPUTIC FROM NON THERAPUTIC.
THE APPLICATION OF THESE.
:SO THE PATIENT STATES THIS, WHAT'S THE BEST RESPONSE BY THE NURSE." THIS IS HOW THE TEST QUESTIONS WILL BE
you use these skills in all psyciatric nursing scenarios.
WHY SYMPHONY BAD, A NON THERAPY?
"I'M SORRY" B/C YOUR THINKING MORE OF YOURSELF NOT THE PATIENT THEMSELVES. OLD DAYS IT WAS GOOD, HELPFUL. i'M SO SORRY DOESN'T GET IT ANYMORE.
IF YOU SELF DISCLOSING IS IT TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER, DON'T USE IT.
USE HUMOR BUT BE CAREFUL ABOUT IT, LIKE WITH PEOPLE WHO JUST GOT BAD NEWS. TOUCH, REALLY IMPORTANT BUT DANGEROUS. KNOW WHEN ITS APPROPIATE. PERSONAL SPACE, ... ELDERLY LIKE TOUCH. NEED IT TOO. KNOW WHEN TO USE TOUCH.
KNOW BOUNDARIES DEALING WITH TOUCH. SOCIAL, INTIMATE, ETC. DISTANCES...ALOT OF IT IS EASY FOR SOME TO DO...
DON'T WEAR UNIFORMS BACK TO CLASS AFTER WORKING IN A HOSPITAL! DON'T WEAR DIRTY SCRUBS TO CLASS!
social relationships are different than theraputic. how?
theraputic use techniques to get information
use Mr and Mrs or Ms in group until they say ...
otherwise.
never say dear or honey!
clients are less likely to sue if ...
you use professional behavior
self disclosure can be theraputic AND non theraputic BUT
never disclose anything
Be careful with humor

what group likes/needs touch
elderly like to be touched
