- forms of communication like anger, fear, depression, guilt, etc. hard to display, like children so develop physical form

- problems that appear to be medical but are due to psychological factors

- psychotherapy, drugs (antidepressants) for preoccupation. For Hysterical (conversion, somatization, and pain) focus on CAUSE (trauma or anxiety) treat like PTSD. (psychodynamic: uncover underlying fears) (behavioral: exposure - reinforcement) (biological: drugs)

- extreme and long term form of facticious disorder - goes to extreme to fake illness

- Hypocondriacs and body dysmorphic disorder
- What is a somatization disorder?
- a long lasting physical ailment with no basis
- What is Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy?
- parents fake illness in children which leads to painful tests, meds, or surgery

- adolescence/young adulthood, more common in women than men
- What is hypocondria?
- intepret body symptoms as signs of serious illness
- What is pain disorder with psychological factors?
- onset, severity, and continuation of pain
- What are the symptoms of somatization disorder?
- pain (headaches/chest pain), gastrointestinal (nausea/diarrhea), sexual (erectile/menstral), neurological (double vision/paralysis)
- What is a conversion disorder?
- a psychosocial conflict or need converted into physical symptoms which affect voluntary motor or sensory function

- brings rewards to sufferer - helps remove from unpleasant circumstance, or get attention. People familiar with disease readily adopt symptoms

- bodily changes - coughing, sweating, sores

- may begin at any age, women more likely then men
- Conversion - when does it happen, men/women and how common?
- childhood, adulthood. more often in women than men. very rare - 5 out of 1,000

- actual change in physical functioning

- focus on wrinkles, spots, facial hair, swelling of face, misshapen nose, mouth, jaw, or eyebrow. sometimes bad odor or breath

- with real paralysis, atrophy sets in. With hysterical, it does not.
- Causes of Somatoform Disorders - Psychodynamic and 2 mechanisms
- electra complex - girl has feelings towards father, represses and becomes physical symptoms. Primary gain - symptoms keep internal conflicts out of awareness. (Ex: man aruging with fears of anger becomes paralysis) Secondary gain - symptoms enable to avoid activities or receive sympathy (ex: paralysis helps soldier avoid combat)
