copy deck
Any headline on a story that goes over a deck or drop and tells the point of the story--mainly tells what's going on in the story
Main Hed
The biggest main hed on a page, particularly an open page or cover. (only one in all CAPS, can be in bold)`
Play Hed
Headlines that go under main or other type heds and give additional information about the story and/or the main or other hed. (elaborates more on main hed and story)
Deck or Drop Hed
Now used as a form of label hed in many periodicals, these go above the main hed, and provide a general topic for the story below. (just a label)
Kicker
Term used for a headline that is only a few words or shorter and almost always DOES NOT INCLUDE A VERB. Common on feature pages and in magazines.
Art Hed
Similar to an art hed but is in the same font as a publication's main heds. Goes over about half the column width of a story. Verbs acceptable. (term dying out)
Hammer
A headline to the side of text
Sidesaddle
Either a one word hed or a full width hed based on the publication. Usually in the same font as main heds. (ex. see WATER pg. 10)
Jump Hed
One-to two-word hed that describes only the subject of what follows.
Label Hed
A type of hed that employs a few words followed by a colon, then two lines of smaller hed text next to it in lighter font. (no longer exists)
Tripod
A type of head that generally goes with an art hed and leads into the main headline. Written in complete sentences, including periods. (Comes over the main headline and leads into it.)
Lead-in or Precede
Similar to a lead-in but also can be used with a main hed and can follow the main hed (does not have to precede it). ALso uses complete sentences.
Readout
A type of hed used in roundups, columns, or compiled material: used to break up the type (in columns) or to serve as main heds for each item (in roundups or compilations.) (can be in bold)
Subhead
a hed that goes over two or more stories and pertains in some way to all the sotries or "package." Umbrellas can be main heds or art heds
