What are the two types of color for igneous rocks?
felsic- light colors
mafic- dark colors
What are the three types of textures for igneous rocks? with a descrption
aphanitic- tiny crystals (glassy)
phaneritic- crystals are visible to the naked eye
porphyritic- large crystals embedded in a small crystalline matrix
What are the four things that classify a igneous rock?
origin
texture
color
compostition
How are igneous rocks formed?
cooling of magma
if the rock is intrusive it will have larger crystal...if extrusive will have smaller cystals
What is the rock cycle?
Igneous

Metamorphic sedimentary
How is a metamorphic rock formed? and what classifys it?
formed by heat and pressure

enlargement of crystals and floitated or non foliated classify it
What is foliation and non foliation
foliation- banded rock mineral are lined up in bands or layers due to the temp. change and density

non- foliation- lack of bands- usually one kind of mineral
How is sedimentary rocks formed and what classifys it?
formed by weathering and erosion

formation and compoistion classify it
What is clastic and non clastic?
clastic-rocks made up of fragments of rock or minerals

non-clastic rocks are then called crystalline
What is bioclastic?
bioclastic- fragments of biological origin, plants, and animals

Cementation-minerals precipitate between grains of sediment

compaction- squeezing air and water our of buried sediments
what is sediment?
small, solid particles of material from rocks or organisms which are moved by water or wind.
what are minerals?
a naturally occuring, inorgainic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemcial compostion
what is weathering and what are the two types?
weathering is the chemical and physical processes that break down rock are earths surface

chemical- process that breaks dowm rock through chemical changes

mechanical-process of breaking down rock is physically broken into smaller pieces.
what are fossils? and what kind of rocks form them?
the preserved remains or traces of living things.
formed by sedimentary rocks mostly.
metamorphic rocks
marble
quartize
schist
slate
graphite
phylite
gneiss
sedimentary rocks
shale
chert
sandstone (wind and water)
coquina
coal
conglomerate
dolmite
halite (salt)
igneous rocks
hylite
pumice (density is greater)
basalt
gabbro
obsidian
grantie
scorina
