- Du Hai
- The son of the Neighborhood Party Committee Secretary, so no one wants to offend him. He is very mischievous, and a terrible student, but he was hard to beat in an argument.
- Da-zi-bao
- Signs that people post on other people's doors and walls that tell why they are four olds, and rightist.
- Old Qian
- Old Qian is a man who lives in Ji-Li's alley. At first the kids in her school go after him, then the Red Guards search his house and are cruel to him.
- Ji-Yun
- Ji-Li's younger sister.SHE DEALT W/ HER CALSS STATUS BY CRYING.
- Old Lady Rong (Bourgeois)
- Her husband was rich, but he died and now she lives off his riches. She is black categories. She wears expensive dresses, etc.
- 1949 People's Rebublic of China
- The Communists had China, the KMT had Taiwan.
- Capitalist
- Capitalists are rich, are rightist, are five black categories, want to exploit workers.
- Taiping Rebellion 1851-1864
- Thought Manchew gov't was made of demons. Combined Christian belief w/ Chinese thought. They wanted to convert China to Christian, they liked foreigners. Led by Hung Hsiu-cn'uan. started "God Worshippers" One guy thought he was the brother of Christ. They were very disorganized, and didn't have money, which is why China defeated them. The British teamed up w/ the Chinese to defeat them. Great peace.
- Du-dui-shang
- In Chinese elementary school, the student president of the whole school, sort of like the student council president.
- Chiang Kai-Shek
- Nationalist leader after Sun Yat-sen. He lead the Northern Expedition.
- Japanese Surrender 1945
- The Americans set off the atomic bomb, and the Japanese surrendered to everyone that they were fighting. THE JAPANESE MOVED TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC.
- War with Japan
- 1931-1938 Nanking Massacre Japanese attack Nanking and kill over 60,000. KMT forced to make united front w/ communists in 1941 Japanese bomb pearl harbor so they stop fighting w/ China, so united front is gone. In 1945 the atomic bomb is blown up and the US force Japan to surrender to the Nationalists.
- Three Principals of the People
- Democracy, nationalism, livlihood. Livlihood = equal land ownership, transportation, manufacturing, trade.
- General Yuan Shih-K'ai
- He was in control of the army, so he had influence of warlords. He took over for 3 or 4 years with the army.
- People's Liberation Army
- The national army of communist China.
- The Four Olds
- Old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. These are considered bad, and people are supposed to replace them with the four news.
- Sun Yat-sen
- He studied in Hawaii, learned nationalism. He was the 1st Nationalist leader. HE WAS A AN INTRUM/ 'SHORT TERM LEADER' HE WAS NOT LIKED BY THE MILITARY.
- Fall of the Qing Dynasty
- The Boxers succeded in killing the Qing.
- The Long March 1934-1935
- The Communists got kicked out of Beijing, so they had to march to An'nan. OUT OF THE 90,000 PEOPLE THAT WENT, ONLY 10,000 SURVIVED. IT WAS A 3000 MILE MARCH.
- Landlords
- Landlords are considered black category. They are rich, exploit farmers, and are overall evil. Their kids and grandkids are considered black whelps.
- Nanking Massacre
- The Japanese came into Nanking and killed over 60,000
- National People's Party (KMT)
- The Kwomingtang (KMT) are the Nationalists, originally lead by Sun Yat-sen. BELIEVE IN A DEMOCRACY AS WELL.
- Treaty of Nanking 1842
- Hong Kong to Brits, ports to Brits, Brits in cities and ports got to follow their own laws, Great Britian didn't have to pay tribute to Chinese to trade, great Britain gained most favorite country so they got same trading rights as any other country. Because China was weakened from the Opium War, it was forced to agree.
- Propaganda Wall
- The propaganda wall is a wall in Ji-Li's neighborhood at first it was a picture of a woman wearing chef's clothes and it said ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL. That was when the gov't was encouraging families to eat at neighborhood canteens to reduce housework and let women work outside the house. Then it had had a picture of smoke from an atomic explosion and had a tiny American trembling. It had said MASTER NUCLEAR WEAPONS, SCARE THE AMERICAN BARBARIANS.
- The Boxer Uprising
- Killed missionaries, killed Christians, burned churches, the Qing pretended to support foreigners but really supported them. Named from the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists. After a while though, the Qing decided that they were too powerful and didn't support them anymore.
- Civil War 1929-1949
- Civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists in the middle of the war, the Japanese invaded, and the Chinese had a united front, but when Japanese were gone the fighting resumed. When this was over, the Communists had China and the KMT had Taiwan.
- United Front
- The KMT and the CCP united against the Japanese
- The Opium Wars
- When British stopped trading w/ Chinese. Stopped wanting to trade w/ British, but British wanted tea. So, they traded silver instead - but later stopped wanting to send silver. They traded opium instead. So, China was "loopy". Chinese gov't tried to stop the sale of opium b/c it was destructive and Chinese were buying it w/ silver. WAR BROKE OUT. In 1832 Chinese ships tried to turn back British ships. UK sent warships in 1840 By 1842, the Qing gov't was forced to agree to British terms.
- Class Status
- Working class, red black. Red is good, it means you are communist. Black is if you are in the five black categories, it is bad. It is best to be working class status, because you are working away all of your four olds habits.
- Extraterritoriality
- The Brits lived in China but followed their laws.
- Ji-Yong
- Ji-Li's younger brother, he is very high spirited. HE DEALT W/ HIS CLASS STATUS DIFFERNTLY AND FOUGHT ABOUT TI
- Mao Zedung
- Leader of Communist China.
- Yang-san (foreign umbrella)
- Not really, this is a sun umbrella, or parasol, not four olds. ACTUALLY, I THINK IT IS A FOUR OLDS. I THINK IT MEANS "WORSHIPING FOREING". DU HAI COMMENTS THAT NOW UMBREALLS ARE MADE IN CHINA, SO IF YOU CALLED IT A YANG-SEN, IT MEANS YOU'RE WORSHIPING THE FOREIGHN:) Ya but didn't Ji-Li say that really it meant sun umbrella?
- Red Successors
- The Chinese elementary schools wanted to have Red Guards, but instead they got Red Successors. They act as Red Guards for their school, and when old enough they become Red Guards.
- Soviet Support of Nationalists
- Sun Yat-sen went to USSR for help, they support him.
- Grandma
- Ji-Li's grandmother. She has to bow to the propaganda wall, because she is considered the wife of a landlord.
- Yang-huo (Foreign fire)
- This literally means foreign fire. This is four olds.
- Northern Expedition
- Chiang Kai-shek lead Nationalists to Northern China in three prongs, defeating warlords. In 1926.
- Communism
- Everything is equal, no one is above.
- Rightists
- Right is closer to the west, capitalism, anti-revolutionary. It is bad to be rightist. You should be a leftist, communist. Ji-Li's dad was accused of being a rightist.
