- Definition of terms for child abuse
- child abuse or maltreatment is generally defined as intentional injury of a child, it can include physical abuse, neglet or failure to provide adequate physical or emotional care or supervision, abandonment, sexual assault or intrusion and overt torture of maiming.
- Negligent treatment
- malicious or ignorant withholding of physical, emotional or education necessities for the child well being. MOST PREVELENT TYPE OF ABUSE
- physical injury
- physical abuse often results from severe corpral punishment or unjustifiable punishment which includes but is not limited to; inflicting lacerations, fx of bones, burns, internal injuries, severe bruising or infliciting serious bodily harm.
- Emotional Abuse
- inculudes verbal assaults, such as blaming, screaming, name-calling and using sarcasm, constant family discord characterized by fighting, yelling and chaos; emotional deprivation or whilholding of affection, nuturing and normal expreriences that result in acceptance, love, securty & self worth. often w/ other abuse
- Sexual abuse

can take place within the family. outside the home/family or by random molester. Adult person takes advantage of child/uses their power to manipulate and intimidate

- incompatibility b/w history of injury by parent and the injury observed
- Shaken baby syndrome
- fatal injury results from severe head trauma. often not recognized b/c no outward signs usually internal hemorrhage presents with resp distress in ED
- Munchausens syndrome by proxy
- parent invents or induces childs illness or symptoms then seeks medical attention for that child.
