- Euphemism
- The substitution of an inoffensive word/expression that replaces one that may offend someone else.
- Syntax
- The way words are put together to form phrases, clauses, and sentences
- Characterization

- Analogy
- A comparison between 2 or more things to show the similarities between them.
- Narrator
- The person who tells the story
- Genre
- The largest category for classifying literature, movies, music
- Plot
- The sequence of events in a story
- Tone
- The attitudes towards the subject and the reader that is implied in the story
- Simile
- 2 unlike things are explicitly compared and uses "like" or "as" in the phrase.
- Style
- An authors characteristic way of writing.
- Irony
- A situation/statement that depends on a discrepancy between what is apparent and what is real.
- Conflict
- Why the story begins - Ex) Man vs. Man, Technology, Nature, Self, God...
- Flashback
- A scene from the past that interrupts the present.
- Persona
- The author's " mask"
- Essay
- Writing that expresses a personal point of view - can persuade or explain.
- Archetype
- reoccurring plot/character - present in all cultures
- Climax
- The turning point in a story; point of greatest intensity/suspense/ interest
- Parable
- A short story that illustrates an explicit moral lesson
- Allusion
- A reference of something that happened in real life in a story
- Symbol
- A word or phrase that is used to stand for an idea
- Omniscient
- Point of view that can see everything and can change perspectives.
- Imagery
- The use of figurative language used to evoke a feeling, idea, or description of object.
- Action
- An even in a story
- Narrative Structure
- Organization of a story that is based on a sequence of events - usually presented in a straightforward chronological framework.
- Character
- A person in a story
- Conventions
- Ways of saying/doing things to achieve certain expected effects.
- Limited point of view
- A perspective that is pinned to only one character.
- Falling action
- In between the climax and conclusion of story - things start to unravel.
- Parody
- A word that imitates another work for laughs by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original.
- Dramatic Irony
- When a character has an expectation or idea, but is reversed or fulfilled in a way that the character did not expect. But we, the reader, knew it was coming
- Deus Ex Machina
- God from a machine
- Protagonist
- The main character or hero
- Stock Character
- A type of character that reappears in a number of stories ( wicked stepmother or drunk)
- Metaphor
- Figure of speech in which 2 things are compared but not alike. (doesn't use "like" or "as")
- Informal diction
- Everyday speech - not lofty, snobby or impersonable
- Sarcasm
- A form of verbal irony in which apparent praise is actually critical
- Connotation
- What is suggested by a word even if it's describing something else.
- Setting
- The time and place in the story
- Denotation
- A direct, specific meaning - like in a dictionary
- Verisimilitude
- The appearance of truth or reality ( largely created by specific, believable details) in a literary work,
- Antihero
- Main character who is not perfect, may do some bad things - but is still "the good guy"
- Structure
- The organization or arrangement of the various elements in a literary work
- Exemplum
- A story inserted in another story to illustrate a moral principal.
- Stereotype
- A characterization based on biases towards people in regards to their race,gender, age ect...
- Oxymoron
- A figure of speech in which a phrase combines 2 apparently contradictory elements. (wise fool)
- Autobiography
- An author's account of his or her own life
- Binary Opposition
- Good vs. Evil
- Personification
- A figure of speech in which a nonhuman is given human qualities
- Satire
- Writing that points out the flaws in anything by using humor
- Theme
- The moral of the story
- Turning Point
- The point at which the action stops rising and begins falling - ( climax)
- Hyperbole
- Overstatement characterized by exaggeration - used for emphasis
- Sub genre
- Division with in the category of a genre. Ex) short story or novel
- Antagonist
- Villain
- Myth
- Stories that are universally shared within a culture to explain history, traditions and/or religion.
- Foreshadowing
- Clues about what will happen later on in the story.
- Allegory
- A story in which the characters represent abstract or moral qualities.
- Diction
- Authors choice of words.
- Denouement
- The end of a story or play. ( conclusion)
- Rising Action
- The action which builds up to the climax
- Formal Diction
- Language that is dignified and impersonal.
- Figurative language
- Language that strays from the literal meaning to achieve special effects.
- Biography
- A detailed story of a person's life.
- Hero
- Leading character , but usually Godlike and has over-the-top traits
- Exposition
- The part of a story or play that sets a scene, characters and situation.

- A statement that is true in fact although it seems to contradict itself.
