- Labor Unions
- Organizations of workers who, together, put pressure on the employers in an industry to improve working conditions and wages.
- Jane Addams
- the founder of Hull House, which provided English lessons for immigrants, daycares, and child care classes
- AFL
- This was the American Federation of Labor. A union of skilled workers from one or more trades which focused on collective bargaining (negotiation between labor and management) to get agreements on wages hours and working conditions. The AFL used this ans strikes win higher wages and shorter work weeks.
- NAACP
- National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, founded in 1909 to work for racial equality
- The Jungle
- This 1906 work by Upton Sinclair pointed out the abuses of the meat packing industry. The book led to the passage of the 1906 Meat Inspection Act.
- Direct Primary
- an election open to all voters within the party
- Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
- In 1911 this fire broke out in NY killing hundreds of people, mostly women, who were trapped behind the doors
- Prohibition
- the period from 1920 to 1933 when the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited in the United States by a constitutional amendment
- Florence Kelly
- Active in the settlement house movement and led progressive labor reforms for women and children.

- Book written by Jacob Riis documenting poverty (has photographs)
- WEB DuBois
- strong believer of gaining full rights for African Americans; founded the Niagara Movement to fight for equal rights
