Trunk, limbs, cranial nerves are effected, No recurrence

Inevitable hospitalization, Ventilation and NG tube, usually full recovery

Affects nerve cells in brain and SC, progressive neruodegenerative disease
ALS
Motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost

Perephiral nervous system disease
ALS
Motor neurons degenerate, can no longer send impulses to the muscles

increasing muscle weakness, especially arms, legs, speech swallowing and breathing
ALS
Muscles not longer receive message from brain so they atrophy
ALS
Twitching and cramping of muscles especially hands and feet
Symptoms ALS
Impairment of the use of the arms and legs distal to proximal

Thick speech and difficulty projecting voice, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and swallowing.

Muscles weakness occuring in approx 60% of Pts. No sensory deficits or incontinence
