- representative democracy
- elect people to make decisions for them. works best for large groups.
- direct democracy
- everyone votes on every issue (all the people decide).
- autocracy
- A type of government in which the people have no say. A single person holds all the power.
- oligarchy
- similar to an autocracy in that the people have no say in power. But instead of one person having all power, it is shared between a small group of people
- force theory
- the belief that government comes aboutthrough conquest or force.
- Divine Right Theory
- a theory stating that a ruler holds power because he or she is a god or was chosen by the gods to rule. Or he or she is believed that they are a god.
- dictator
- controls the government with absolute power. modern term for absolute monarchy.
- Social Contract theory
- A. states that government exists for permission from the people and to help the people out. Government is in place because the people want it to be there. This is one of the principal Thomas Jefferson and the founding fathers used when drafting our constitution.
- Constitutional Monarchy
- is a monarch that has lost some of his or her power. Often are figure heads (only has ceremonial power) the real power resides with parliament or congress.
- coercive
- the ability of a government to force people to obey it
- Confederation government
- Loose unit of independent states. In this type of government each state has it's own government. Each state retains its independency.
- absolute monarch
- a king or queen, people who inherit their positions or take them by force. Power is transferred through the family.
- state
- 1)a group of people 2)living in a territory 3)with the power to make laws 4)without having to ask permission from a higher authority
- Evolutionary theory
- a theory stating that the earliest government developed from the family
- Federal system of government
- Divides power between national and state governments. National has certain has certain powers and so does the state government
- Democracy
- a type of government in which the people rule- means ruled by the people.
- unitary government
- All power is help by the national government. Uses its powers to set up smaller governments like states or provinces.
- government
- a group of people that do things for us that we can't do for ourselves
