- Bragdon v. Abbott
- in this case, the Supreme Court ruled that HIV-positive is included as a disibility that the law covers. becuase of this, people with HIV and AIDS are protected against discrimination in the workplace
- Cert
- directs a lower court to send up the records of a case
- Miranda v. Arizona
- law officers must inform suspects of their rights, such as the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney, when questioning a suspect. decided because of this case
- Conference
- when the justices meet amoung themselves to discuss the cases before deciding the outcome
- Jurisdiction
- area of law that a court may hear cases about
- Marbury v. Madison
- a man was set to be a federal judge by his president, but the comission was not sent in time. when the new secreatry of state went to send the comission, the new president did not allow it. the man did get his position, but did not get the writ of mandamus he asked for.
- Judicial review
- deciding if Supreme Court decisions are Constitutional or not
- Brown v. Board of Education
- in this case, girl's father claimed "separate but equal" not equal or constitutional because she had to cross town to an unequal school. Supreme Court agreed, and no longer claimed "separate but equal" constitutional.
- Worcester v. Georgia
- in this case, the court ruled that Georgia had no authority in the Cherokee land. president jackson dissagreed, and made the Cherokees move to the Indian Territory anyway
- Gideon v. Wainwright
- in this case, the Supreme Court ruled that anyone who is too poor to hire an attorney must be assigned one by the court
- Brief
- a document that describes the legal arguments in favor of a lawyer's side
- Constitutional court
- a court set up by Congress under the authority of Article III of the constitution that hears both criminal and civil cases related to federal laws
- Plessy v. Ferguson
- in this case, a man claimed "separate but equal" was unconstitutional and not "equal." Supreme Court declared that is was okay, as long as it was "equal."
- Legislative court
- one of six federal courts created by Congress to hear cases realated to Congress's power to govern under Article I
- Writ of mandamus
- a document that orders a government official to preform a duty
