an area of land that serves as a barrier to protect itself from others

This means that there are not many.
royal colony
This was a colony that had a king ruling the colony.
missions
These were small religious communities which included a church.
borderlands
The buffer north of New Spain protected it from New France, New Netherland, and the English colonies. This became known as the Spanish borderlands. It stretched across what are today northern Mexico and the southern United States from Florida to California.
immigrants
These are people who come to live in a country from another country.
haciendas
Theses are large Spanish estates where they raised cattle and sheep by the thousands.
Puritans
This was a religious group tht wanted to make the Church of England more "pure".
refuge
This is a safe place.
presidio
Spanish fort
permanent
This means that it is long-lasting.
cash crop
An example is tobacco which was raised to sell rather than to use themselves.
debtor
This is a person who owes money
self-sufficient
This means that you are self-supporting. In other words, you can take care of yourself.
proprietary colony
This is a colony where the king gave ownership to one person and allowed that person to rule. John Law became Louisiana's owner.
