- Copernicus
- Polish astronomer who developed the heliocentric theory that the earth revolved the sun. Went against the church's beliefs of the geocentric (earth centered) model
- Martin Luther
- German religious reformer who started the reformation with his posting of the 95 Thesis which attacked certain practices of the Catholic church
- Kepler
- brilliant mathematician whose work showed that Copernicus' ideas were true. Mathematical laws prove planets revolve around the sun in an elliptical orbit
- Absolutism
- one person has total control over the country and people
- Heliocentric
- theory of the universe developed by Copernicus that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun
- Scientific method
- a logical procedure which developed during the Renaissance for gathering information about the natural world in which experimentation and observation are used to test the hypothesis
- Galileo
- Italian astronomer and one of the founders of the Scientific Revolution. He used the telescope to prove Copernicus' heliocentric model. He got into trouble with the Pope.
- Protestant Reformation
- religious reform which occurred in Europe in the 16-18th century following Luther's posting of the 95 thesis. Decreased the power of the Catholic Church
- 95 Thesis
- list of grievances posted by Martin Luther in 1517 to show questionable Church practices. Instead of reforming the Catholic church, the Protestant Reformation occurred.
- Newton
- English scientist who explained the movement of the Earth and solar system in his Universal Law of Gravitation. Also developed calculus.
