means "tents." -was originally a harvest festival. Make huts or cabins of boughs with the leaves on them and actually live in them for the seven days of the feast. "born again"
Jesus says "Unless a man to be born again of water and the holy spirit. He cannot enter in enter into the kingdom of heaven. It means entering into another, higher life, the life which gives those powers to the soul without which it would be unable to live in heaven.

Joseph of Arimathea
asked Pilate for Jesus' body. Memeber of the Sanhedrin and "already a disciple, but secretly for fear of the Jews." Placed the body in a tomb he prepared for himself, close to Calvary.
Herod the Great
King of the Jews, Heard about the Messiah. Anther king of the Jews would put his worship at an end. "descendant of heroes." He was a nobody and a tyrant. Not a jew by race-circumcised. Built the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Too sophisticated to believe that heaven would send a Messiah. 1. Summon the chief priests and scribes and ask them where he was born 2. To have the strangers brought to him privately old the strangers hat they should go to Bethlehem and inquire for the child. -Must keep the matters btw himself and the gentiles. -Would kill baby, parents, and magi. 3. Men did not come back -decided to kill every baby under two in bethlehem
'work' for a Pharisee
very strict about the sabbath- nothing heavier than a fig might be carried and even distance was prescribed.. Distance was limited. This is why they were angry about Jesus' miracles on the sabbath
Herodians
men of a political cast, who wanted the kingdom of Herod the Great restored to his son Herod Antipas. This being Galilee, the Pharisees could not destroy Jesus without the cooperation of the Herod party.
Pharisees
Jesus called them white sepulchers. Pharisees litterally means "separated." From uncleanness of soul and body. Dominated the synagogues. Did not accept the remainder of the Old Testament and the writings of the commaentators and the scribes. Believed in immorality of souls. Concerned with external moral practice

Herodias
Wife of Herod Antipas brother. She was niece to both men, and seems to have a pechant for uncles. Daughter is Salome. Eventually married Antipas. Big scandals because divorce was not allowed.

Bethany
Jesus is with Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Mary leaves Martha and she annoints Jesus; head and his feet with precious ointment, and wipes his feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the odor of ointment. Anointing for the burial.

Mary and Martha
Sisters. Brother Lazarus. Jesus comes to the house and mary is at his feet while Martha is doing work. Martha asks why Jesus isn't mad that Mary is not helping her. Mary had chosen the best part.
