Front Tears

Annex
To incorporate (territory) into the domain of a city, country, or state.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
In February 1848, the uS and Mexico signed theis treaty, which officially ended the war and forced Mexico to turn over much of its northern territory to the United States. The bountry was now at Rio Grade. The US payed $15 million.
Donner Party
Was a group of western travelers who went to California but were stranded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during winter. Almost half of the party died.
John Sutter
Was a Swiss pioneer of California known for his association with the California Gold Rush by the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall and the mill making team at Sutter's Mill, and for establishing Sutter's Fort in the area that would eventually become Sacramento, the state's capital.
Utah
The new home to the Mormons.
Sam Houston
Was a hero of the new independent natuion fo Texas. The republic reated a new town named Houston and made it capital. He was head of the Tesas army. First president in Texas.

Zachary Taylor
The 12th president of the US. An army officer in the Black Hawk War and Second Seminole War, he became a national hero during the Mexican War and was President in 1848. He died after less than two years in office. he was ordered by Polk to lead an army to a diputed region. the diputed region was between Nueces River and Rio Grande River.
"Gam saan haak"
The chinese phrase for travelers (chinese imigrants) to Gold Mountain.
Oregon Trail
Many settlers moving to Oregon Country and other western areas followed the 2,000-mile-long trail which stretched from places such as Independence, Missouri, or Council Bluffs, Iowa, west into Oregon Country.
Gadsden Purchase
this land included the present day states of California, Nevda, and Utah. Most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Whyoming. Purchased for 10,000,000 from Mexico.
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna
Mexico had come under rule of this man. He soon suspended Mexico's republican constitution and turned his attention to the growing unrest in Texas.he was captured in the alamo. Later he will be defeated andcaptured by Sam Houston.
March 2, 1836
Texans declared their independence from Mexico. The new Republic of Texas was born.
Empresarios
They brought settlers to Texas and payed with land.
Manifest Destiny
Obvious fate, to settle land all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to spend democracy. A belief shared by the American should expand to Pacific and expand democracy.
"Fifty-Four Forty or fight"
This slogan refuerred to 54 degrees 40' north latitude. The line to which Americans wanted their northern territory to extend. Oregon's bontry ended up at 59 parrell.
Mormon Trail
Mormons took this trail to the area near the Great Salt Lake, where they prospered.
Father Miguel Hidalgo Costilla
In Sep 1810 this Mexican priest, led a rebellion of about 80,000 poor Indians and mestezos, or people of Indian and Spanish ancestry. They hoped that if Mexico became independent from the Spanish monarchy, their lives would improve.
Brigham Young
After Smith's murder he became head of the Mormon Church.
John Jacob Astor
Created one of the largest fur businesses, the American Fur Company. He bought skins from western fur traders and trappers who became known as montain men. Astoria was named after him.
Livi Strauss
a german imigrant and the miners were looking for a cloth the wear. He made denim jeans.
Mexican Cession
this land included the present day states of Calfornia, Nevada, and Utah. Most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of colorado and Wyoming.
General Winfield Scott
Taylor's populartiy troubled President Polk, and when his progress stalled, Polk gave the command to this man. A beloved leader, he was known by his troops as "Old Fuss and Feathers" becasue of his strict military discipline. Commander of the army following Taylor and commander when Mexico surrendered.
Alamo
An abandoned mission near San Antonio that became an important battle site in the Texas Revolution.

God seeking imigrants to California.
Santa Fe Trail
This trail was from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Battle of San Jacinto
The Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas its independence. Remember the Alamo was the Battle Cry.
James K. Polk
The Democratic Party chose this farmer Tennessee governor to oppose Clay. Both candidates strongly favored acquiring Texas and Oregon. He favored manifest distiny.
Stephen F. Austin
In 1822 one young agent started a Texas colony on the lower Colorado River. His successful colony attracted other agents, and American settlers flocked to the region. He helped Texas fight for independence from Mexico.
