Is there a relationship between spiritual formation and your worldview?

One way to examine whether our understanding of spiritual formation is consistent with a Biblical worldview is to think through the implications of the Biblical metanarrative.

What are the three prerequisites of formative growth?

1. Goal or design end

2. Potential to reach that goal

3. Provisions ne

Using Col 1.28-29 describe the design end of Christian spiritual formation.

Christ defines spiritual maturity for us in that He, as God incarnate, presents to us what it means to image God completely as a human being.

How has salvation addressed the problems associated with the factors by which we are formed?

Fallen human nature is changed through regeneration.

How do we have a new potential to reach the goal of Christ-likeness?

It is through regeneration.

What new resources are made available to us to provide for our growth potential to be realized?

The inter-dependent ministry of the body of Christ is now available.

Disciplined Living

Disciplined living is the intentional and deliberate ordering of the activities of my life for the purpose of gaining a desired goal.

Three things are necessary for disciplined living

a vision, a plan, and follow-through.

Discipline is a fruit of the Spirit

“self-control.”

An example of grace and human intention cooperating is

Ezra who set his heart to study, practice, and teach the law of God. And God graciously blessed his efforts. (Ezra 7:10)

An important related principle is

the “mysterious principle of life” which describes our effort as cultivation, but God must give life that brings growth.

There are six things to remember about spiritual disciplines:

1. They take effort

2. They are a use of means.

3. Their purpose is godl

There are five conditions under which the Spirit fulfills His role. These are:

1. Present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

2. When you set your mind and heart upon the things which

Living in the Spriit is NOT:

1. Following vague feelings of peacefulness

2. A mechanical formula for following God.

One way to inspire trust in God is to recognize that

he cares as demonstrated by Jesus becoming human, dying in our place, and creating a new community in one body.

God does not tempt us to evil, but he does

test us with a view to approval.

God is able to take our sin and suffering and turn it into

basis for blessing as when Joseph’s brothers intended evil, but God intended good.

James 1:2-4 indicates that the goal of God’s testing us is to make us

“perfect and complete”.

Perfect or mature means in this context to

possess a character trait as fully as possible.

Complete in this context means

to possess all the character traits that make us like Jesus.

Testing is necessary for growth in virtues because

it tells us where we are and give us a chance to exercise the virtue.

Suffering has the effect

of getting our focus off worldly matters and upon things that are of genuine worth.

Christians can uniquely embrace suffering because

ending suffering is not our highest goal. Higher goals include: glorifying God, becoming like Christ, reaching the lost. Not so much why do I suffer as what shall I suffer for?

Growing in character requires community in two ways:

1. In being a man or woman of character, doing the virtues

2. In becoming a man or woman of character, getting the virtues.

Conforming to the image of God according to a Biblical WV means

living in community. Therefore spiritual formation with a design end of conforming to the image of God requires that we live in community.

What are the qualities of a community that contributes to formation?

One with meaningful relationships.

One in which unity is shared.
