- When and why was the frontier closed?
- 1890, The frontier was closed because the land there was quickly settled because of new railroad lines and government policies.
- What is imperialism?
- The policy of extending one country's rule over other nations and colonies. American imperialism began in the late 1800's.
- What was Manifest Destiny?
- The belief in the 1800's of the inevitable expansion of the US, which was believed to have the right and duty to bring progress and democracy to all of North America.
- What was "Seward's Folly?"
- Secratary of State William Seward's purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 was thought to be a "folly" because Alaska was thought to be an icy wasteland. It turned out to have fine harbours, huge deposits of gold, abundant wildlife, and vast forests.
- How did Hawaii go from a Monarchy to a colonial territory?
- In 1893, rebels revolted against Queen Liliuokalani and was annexed by US because U.S. would then extend the sugar treaty (Hawaiian economy went up) and gain use of a potential naval base, Pearl Harbour.
- How did America acquire Samoa?
- IN 1889 warships from Germany, Great Britain, and U.S. anchored in Samoan harbour. Resolved peacefully with Germany getting two larger islands, and US got island of Tutuila and harbour at Pago Pago.
- What was the Venezuelan Boundary Dispute?
- U.s. settled the boundary dispute between Great Britain and Venezuela through arbitration--using an impartial third party. Venezuela got control of Orinoco River, Great Britain got most of the disputed land though
- What were Cuban concentration camps for?
- Cuban General tried to destroy support for Cuban rebels by placing Cubans into concentration camps---temporary shelters for prisoners. Cubans died by thousands because of unsanitary conditions, overcrowding, and disease.
- What did the slogan "Remember the MAINE" represent?
- One night while the U.S. battleship the MAINE was anchored in the Havana harbour, a huge explosion sunk the ship and almost all crew members. Americans believed it was a Spanish mine that had caused the explosion, this caused Americans to rally towards war against Spain yelling "Remember the MAINE!"
- How did yellow journalism effect the Spanish-American war?
- Newspapers printed sensational stories about Spanish atrocities in Cuba that helped create sympathy and public support for the Cuban cause.
- Who were the "Rough Riders?"
- Theodore Roosevelt became a lieutenant colonial of the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders were a volunteer regiment of college athletes, cowboys, Texas Rangers, prospectors, and American Indians. This was one of the many regiments that signed upo to fight in the war.

- U.S. controlled Philippines but was gradually self-governed until Philippines were granted independence on July 4 1946.

- method where Filipinos struck swiftly at isolated American patrols or outposts then disappeared back into friendly villages or the jungle.

- Spheres of influence were established in China. Each nation who had a sphere of influence controlled a part of China and exercised exclusive economic rights and political rights in its sphere.

- A Chinese group against the way foreigners were controlling china called the BOXERS rose in a revolt in 1900 know as the Boxer Rebellion.
- What was the Open Door Policy?
- A policy established by Pres. McKinley requiring all nations with a sphere of influence in China to keep all ports, railroads, and trading privileges in its sphere open to other nations.
- What relevance did the Monroe Doctrine have during America's age of imperialism?
- The Monroe Doctrine stated that America was against any futher European colonization of the Americas. During the age of imperialism, the U.S. stretched the Doctirne to justify every thing they were doing. They used it to justify taking over European Colonies. (Spanish-American war)
