- The "White Man's Burden"
- The "White Man's Burden" is a poem by Rudyard Kipling. Imperialists kept this phrase because the "White Man's Burden" is a characterization for imperialism that has justified the policy as a noble enterprise.
- Mexican-American War
- The United States supported Venustiano Carranza. U.S. was willing to use force to protect interests. The Mexicans wanted to go to war with the United States, but the U.S. refused.
- Alfred Thayer Mahan
- A United States Navy officer, geostrategist, and educator. His ideas on the importance of sea power influenced navies around the world, and helped prompt naval buildups before World War I. Several ships were named USS Mahan, including the lead vessel of a class of destroyers. His research into naval History led to his most important work, The Influence of Seapower Upon History,1660-1783, published in 1890
- Boxer Rebellion
- It was seen as an excuse to get more land from China. Secretary of State John Hay said that we should respect China's independence.
- Commodore George Dewey
- He is the commander of the Pacific Fleet who received secret orders from President Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War.
- Spanish-American War
- It only lasted four months. The battlefront was from the farther Philippines to the close Caribbean.
- Expansionism
- When countries extend their national borders outward.
- Purchase of Alaska
- In December, 1866, the U.S. offered to take Alaska from Russia. Russia was eager to give it up, as the fur resources had been exhausted, and, expecting friction with Great Britain, they preferred to see defenseless Alaska in U.S. hands. Called "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's Icebox", the purchase was made in 1867 for $7,200,000 and gave the U.S. Alaska's resources of fish, timber, oil and gold.

- It is the policy of powerful countries looking to control the political and economic affairs of weaker regions and countries.
- The Rough Riders
- When they were first organized, they were called the First Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The Rough Riders were a mixed group, ranging from adventurers, college students, and cowboys.
- Isolationism
- A policy of avoiding contact with other countries
- "Yellow Journalism"
- Sensational stories that are usually untrue or biased.
- Peacekeeping in Bosnia
- A republic from Eastern Europe where fighting broke out between the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims. US tried to keep peace here
- Spheres of Influence
- Areas in which countries have some political and economic control but do not govern directly (ex. Europe and U.S. in China)
- Emilio Aguinaldo
- He was the leader of the Cuban rebels. With Emilio leading, he helped the Americans capture Manila.
- Theodore Roosevelt
- He organized the First Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, which later turned into the Rough Riders.
- Washington's Farewell Address
- He advised the nation to steer clear of permanent allies and he urged us to have as little conntection as possible
- Open Door Policy
- In 1899 John Hay wrote this which called for fair trade in China for all.
- Commodore Matthew Perry
- United States Navy officer who is responsible for opening Japan to trade and imperialism in the 1800's after taking 4 warships to Japan.
- Roosevelt Corollary
- It is the right of the U.S. to intervene in Latin America to save law and order.
- Building of the Panama Canal
- The Panama Canal was constructed by the US to allow ships to reach the Pacific from the Atlantic.
- "Remember the Maine"
- The U.S. battleship Maine was in Havana when an explosion caused it to sink. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and no one knows if it was done by an enemy or if it was done by accident.
- "Seward's Folly"
- Americans thought that the purchase of Alaska was a foolish idea and referred to it as "Seward's Folly".
- Philippine Insurrection
- Before the Philippines was annexed by the U.S., tension existed between U.S. troops and Filippinos. Eventually we entered into a war with the Philippines.
- Queen Liliuokalani
- She cherished Hawaiian independence and disliked the rising power of the American planters. She came to the throne after her brother Kalakaua died.
