- Platt Amendment
- Amendment to Cuba's constitution that limited Cuba's freedom and allowed the U.S. to intervene in Cuban affairs
- Great White Fleet
- Nickname for the large, steam-powered ships of the U.S. Navy
- Maine
- American warship that exploded in Havana, Cuba and was used by American newspapers to create support for war with Spain
- Rough Riders
- Volunteer cavalry regiment organized by Theodore Roosevelt for the Spanish-American War
- Foraker Act
- Setup a government in Puerto Rico, giving Puerto Ricans a limited say in their own affairs
- Matthew Perry
- Sent by President Fillmore to Japan to open Japan to trade with the U.S.
- Pan-American Union
- Group of North and South American countries set up to solve problems in the Western Hemisphere
- Sphere of Influence
- Area in China where a foreign nation had special trading privileges and made laws for its own citizens
- Spanish-American War**
- 4 months in 1898; US became a colonial power and gained territories such as Puerto Rico and the Philippines
- Isthmus
- A narrow strip of land connecting to larger land areas
- Open Door Policy
- Policy toward China that allowed a nation to trade in any other nation's sphere of influence
- Imperialism**
- The policy by which a powerful country takes control of the economic and political affairs of a weaker country or region; this foreign policy was especially followed from 1870 to 1914
- Treaty of Kanagawa
- Agreement by Japan to open two ports to trade with the U.S. and to help shipwrecked U.S. sailors
- Armistice
- A temporary peace agreement to end fighting.
- Roosevelt Corollary**
- Expansion of the Monroe Doctrine by Theodore Roosevelt that claimed America had the right to interfere in Latin America to preserve law & independence
- Boxer Rebellion
- An attack by members of the Righteous Order of Fists in China against foreigners, killing more than 200.
- Pancho Villa
- Rebel Mexican General who led a raid against Columbus, New Mexico, killing 17 Americans
- Annexation
- Bringing an area under the control of a larger country.
- Isolation**
- A foreign policy of having little to do with foreign nations - American thought this was the best policy in the 1800's and after WWI
- Battle of San Juan Hill
- Victory by the Rough Riders and Pershing's 9th and 10th Cavalries over the Spanish near Santiago, Cuba.
