Merry Person- was not like the poet or the director. He was a silly guy who did not care. He just wants to make the play entertaining and funny. Make it for the enjoyment of the crowd. Not money and passion.

The director talks about striving. To him writing a play is a form of striving if you put your all into writing the play, people may not appreciate it.
Goethe's Prologue in Heaven
A conversation between Mephistopheles and God. Mephistopheles makes a mockery of people on earth. God has not sense of humor. Example of Humanity which is earth' s little God. Mephistopheles is telling Goad about how people on earth have never changed. He says humans think they are smart but they aren't. God ask Mephistopheles if he knew Faust. Mephistopheles says yes, but he doesn't serve you like he should. God says Faust is a good guy. Mephistopheles challenges God. God and Mephistopheles make a bet on who will get Faust. God says even Faust knows his true welfare. Meaning that Faust will turn to God. And God will win.
2nd Striving in Goethe's Prologue in Heaven
God says if Faust is not striving he is not living therefore, God claims a win on Faust.

Dr. Faustus was a theologian, was greedy, didn't like life, but was afraid of death. Was selfish , non responsible. Was a Lutheran, a symbol of modern science.

colors were neon purple, dark blue, red evil and depressing. Helen wore silver and white to represent royalty or to play her role. In the end Heleln was green like a snake (Lusfer) and the background was bright red in hell. All white when they were with the monks. Faust mocked them. Picked on the worker or royalty, created horns on his head.

The poodle became restless and starting growling at Faust. The poodle was mad because Faust did not feel depressed anymore and sought nature. Then Faust refers to his office as a dungeon. Faust contentment began to go down because of the poodle. Faust says if he goes back to work, he will feel good again. He tries to translate the bible. He gets stuck on the words: in the beginning was the word. He says it should be in the beginning was the deed. The poodle then becomes excited and transforms into a huge animal. Faust tries to change it by putting a spell on it. And then the spirits of evil come down to save Mephistopheles. The Prologue in heaven is based on JOB in the bible.

Faust tries to put a spell on Mephistopheles but it dosen't work. The poodle then changes into a student that serves as an advisor. Faust questions the poodle, mephistopheles is offended. Mephistopheles is directed by God Human nature to Faust was good.
Goethe's Street/Walk/The Garden/Interruption in the Forest
At the street. Faust meets Gretchen and is happy, falls deeply in love with her. Before he meets her he gives her pearls and jewels. Gretchen's religious mother took them away from her. Because they were materialistic things. Mephistopheles shows up to at Martha's place to tell her that her husband died and she will get the benefits. Invites them both to meet with Faust. They foursome goes to the Garden. Mephistopheles is with Martha and Faust is with Gretchen or (Marguerite). Faust goes back with nature in the cave thinking about what he is about to do. Mephistopheles says "what are you doing?" Faust says stop bothering me, Mephistopheles says hw would be happy to leave him to be content. The argument goes from really loud by Franz Shubert's version. Faust calls Mephistopheles a pimp. Faust says if he gets Gretchen he will ruin her innocence. Compares Gretchen to Mary in the bible and Juliet in Shakespeare. Faust knows his actions will bring the destruction of Gretchen, but he can't stop. Mephistopheles says you are one of us now. He created the problem now Faust has to go through with it.

full of saddness, simple rhyming poem, can be sung, without music. Gretchen is at the spinning wheel going from sadness to heart-broken, non philosophical and passiontate.

Walgupris Night's Dream (the hangover?)
-Gretchen ends up getting pregnant and killing her baby, she then goes to the dungeon, also watched her brother get beat up. Faust is sad so he demands that he and Mephistopheles go rescue Gretchen. Mephistopheles uses black magical horses to get them to the dungeon by 12 am to get Gretchen before she dies. Gretchen refused to leave and Gretchen was killed at sunrise. Angels said she was redeemed, Mephistopheles says she was condemned.
