To see how easy WinFlash is to use, let's jump right into a study question - from first grade math. 2 + 2 = ? Before proceeding, notice the scroll bar along the right edge of this text area. Run this up and down with the mouse to move up and down the tex: Ahhh... If only they were all that easy, eh? This type of pair is a "standard" pair and is not automatically scored - handy when the answer is long and complex. All we need to do for a standard pair is tell WinFlash if we got it right or not by clicking the Correct or Incorrect button. There are better pair types for use with short answer pairs, though - click the Correct button and we'll see an example.
Let's try the 2+2 question again. This time we'll use the fill-in-the-blank pair type. We've set up this pair so that it will accept either the numeral '4' or the word four as a correct answer. Now go ahead and enter the answer. Click in the editing area: If you entered "4" or "four" or even "FoUr" you'll see a green check mark flashing in the control bar at the bottom. Click the Try Question Again button and this time enter an intentionally incorrect answer. Now you'll see a flashing red 'x' indicating an incorrect answer. These indicators are used for all of WinFlash's automatically scored question types. The bar with the colored boxes across the top of both the Question and Answer dialogs carries information about the current study session. The box that now says "Math" displays the category of the pair or the word "Category" if none is assigned to the current pair. Proceeding to the right, the boxes indicate Current Pair, Unasked Pairs Remaining, Total Pairs Completed This Session, Total Correct, Total Incorrect and Percent Correct. Let's try one of the buttons - click the button between the two blue boxes - it'll show the answer you actually entered. This is for those times when you'd swear you entered the right answer but the program says it's wrong :-) Click the Show Next Question button to proceed. Those who prefer the keyboard for navigation will note that virtually all actions can be accessed by pressing Alt and the underlined character on the key or menu item desired. In this case Alt-N will move to the next pair. The text directly below is automatically generated by the program - this allows you to optionally omit answer text (other than the correct answers for fill-in or multiple choice pairs) when creating the deck. You could have answered with any of the following: 1. 4 2. four
Here's another pair type I'm sure you're familiar with - multiple choice. Many programs only allow a single correct answer for this type of question. WinFlash allows any number of the answers to be true - from none to all. Just to make it a little intere: The Answer dialog has a feature similar to the hint feature - comments. When one or more is available, they can be played by clicking on the status bar button with the telephone on it. Give it a try. Again, the text below this point is automatically constructed by the program. Click Show Next Question when you're ready to proceed. The correct answer is: Number 1 New England and Number 4 Boston and Number 6 Massachusetts
You'll notice that the score in the status bar only updates after finally leaving the previous pair. This allows WinFlash to properly handle Try Question Again operations. This Question illustrates a special version of the multiple-choice pair - the True: Definitely True!
