- conflict
- Struggle between opposing forces or struggle that gives any story its energy and makes it interesting
- external conflict
- Character struggles with an outside source
- internal conflict
- Conflict that takes place within a character’s mind
- footnote
- A note at the bottom of a page, giving further information about something mentioned in the text above
- character
- A person in a story, novel, or play that takes part in the action of a story
- context clue
- Words or phrases near an unfamiliar word that can help you figure out the word’s meaning.
- irony
- Irony is a contrast between expectations and reality.
- verbal irony
- A contrast between what is said and what is meant
- situational irony
- Occurs when what happens is very different than what we expect.
- dramatic irony
- Occurs when the audience or readers knows something the character does not know.

- A writer’s account of his or her own life

- A narrator is a person or character in whose voice a story is told.
