- lasted for three weeks. the french general told john j. pershing to make sure to have trenches to retreat to, and pershing told him that the marines would not retreat. and they didn't. the germans gave the marines the nickname of 'devil dogs' during belleau wood. there was a battalion that was separated from the rest of the troops (called the lost battalion) they sent messages by a pigeon called cher ami who was shot tree times and recived a medal.
