- ADVERB
- A word that gives more information about "when, where, how or in" what circumstances something happens or to what degree something is true - e.g. "quickly, happily"
- AUXILIARY VERB
- a verb such as "be, have or do" used with a main verb to form tenses, negatives and questions
- COMPARITIVE
- an adjective/adverb that is used to compare people, things or actions - e.g. "slower, less important"
- CONJUGATE (to)
- an adjective/adverb that is used to compare people, things or actions - e.g. "slower, less important"
- CONTINUOUS TENSE
- a verb tense formed using "to be" and the "-ing" form of the main verb - e.g. "they're swimming" (present continuous), "he was eating" (past continuous)
- DIRECT OBJECT
- A noun or pronoun used with verbs to show who or what is acted on by the verb, e.g. he wrote a "letter"
- GERUND
- a verb form in english ending in "ing"
- IMPERATIVE
- a verb form used when giving orders or instructions - e.g. "Shut the door."
- IMPERFECT
- a verb tense used to talk about the past - e.g. "It was sunny", "I used to ..."
- INFINITIVE
- a verb form that DOES NOT have any endings added to it and doesn't relate to a tense - "to speak, to eat"
- INTERROGATIVE ADJECTIVE
- A question word used witha noun - e.g. "what instruments, which shoes"
- INTERROGATIVE PRONOUN
- One of the words "Who, whose, whom, what and which" used instead of a noun.
- IRREGULAR VERB
- A verb whose forms do not follow a general pattern.
- PASSIVE
- a verb form where the subject is the person/thing affected by the action - e.g. "we were told"
- PERFECT
- a verb form used to talk about what has or hasn't happened
- PERSONAL PRONOUN
- "I, you, they" - used to refer to you, the people you are talking to or the people/things you are talking about
- PLUPERFECT
- verb tense to describe somthing that "had" happened or "had" been true. Also called past perfect.
- PREPOSITION
- word such as "as, at, for, with, into, from" usually followed by a noun/pronoun/gerund.
- PRETERITE
- verb form used to talk about actions that were completed in the past.
- PRONOUN
- a word used instead of a noun - e.g. "it, you, none"
- PROPER NOUN
- name of a person/place/thing. Always starts with a capital letter.
- REFLEXIVE PRONOUN
- a word ending in -self or -selves (myself/themselves) which refers back to the subject
- REFLEXIVE VERB
- a verb wher the subject and object are the same, and where the action 'reflects back' on the subject.
- REGULAR VERB
- a verb whose forms follow a general pattern or the normal rules
- RELATIVE PRONOUN
- a word such as "that, who or which" when it is used to link two parts of a sentence together.
- SIMPLE TENSE
- a verb tense in which the verb form is made up of one word from "to have" and a past participle or "to be" and a gerund - e.g. "She Plays"
- SUBJECT
- a noun/pronoun that refers to the person/thing doing the action or being in the state described by the verb.
- SUBJECT PRONOUN
- a word such as "I, he, she, they" which carries out the action described by the verb.
- SUBJUNCTIVE
- a verb form used to indicate feeling, show doubt about wheter something will happen or is true. Only occasionally used in English.
- SUPERLATIVE
- an adjective/adverb with -est on the end or most or least in front of it used to compare people/actions/things.
- TENSE
- a verb form that shows wheter you are referring to the past, present or future.
- TRANSITIVE VERB
- a type of verb that takes a direct object - e.g. "to spend", "to raise"
- VERB
- a doing word which describes what someone/something does, is or what happens to them
