Basic Tenses

Elliptical Clause
a clause in which some words have been left out.
Adverb
word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
Abbreviation
a shortened form of a word or expression.
Compound-Complex Sentence
a sentence made up of more than one main clause and at least one subordinate clause.
Ellipsis
three periods in a row.
Antecedent
word which the pronoun stands for.
Compound
used to describe the combining of similar grammatical units in a number of circumstances.
Contraction
a word shortened by leaving out some letters.
Direct Quotations
When a person or work is quoted directly and word for word, the quotation is placed in quotation marks.
Comparative Degree
Adjectives and adverbs ending in -er or modified by the word more compare two items.
Coordinate Adjectives
If two adjectives modify a noun in the same way, place a comma between the two adjectives.
Direct Address
the name of the person (normally) who is being directly spoken to.
Active Voice of Verbs
form of the verb used when the subject is the doer of the action.

Conjunctive Adverbs
adverbs that act as a transition between complete ideas.
Dangling Modifiers
a phrase or clause which says something different from what is meant because words are left out.
Ambiguous
phrase or word that has more than one meaning
Adjective
word that modifies a noun or pronoun.
Clause
a group of words containing a subject and verb which forms part of a sentence.
Capitalize
larger letters used at the beginning of sentences and names.
Complement
a word that follows a verb and completes the meaning of the sentence or verbal phrase.
Absolute Modifiers
modify the entire sentence, giving the reader additional information.
Article
a type of adjective which makes a noun specific or indefinite.
Case
form of a word which shows its relationship to other words in the sentence.
Cumulative Adjectives
If the paired adjectives fail the two-part test, then no comma is used. This shows that they must remain in a certain order to make sense.
Demonstratives
a pronoun or adjective which points out which item is being referred to.
Adjective Clause
subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun.
Acronyms
words with capital letters and without periods
Dependent Clauses
"Depending" on the main clause to give meaning.
Conjunctions
words that join words, phrases, or sentence parts.
Appositive
a noun, noun phrase, or noun clause which follows a noun or pronoun and renames or describes the noun or pronoun.
