- aliquot
- A portion of a well-mixed sample removed for testing.
- The substance or chemical being analyzed or detected in a specimen.
- analyte
- A chemical added to the blood after collection to prevent clotting.
- anticoagulant
- A substance that is known to cause cancer.
- carcinogenic
- A substance that burns or destroys tissue by chemical action
- caustic
- Fluid within the subarachnoid space, the central canal of the spinal cord, and the four ventricles of the brain.
- cerebrospinal fluid
- The study of cells unsing microscopic methods
- cytology
- A liquid used to dilute a specimen or reagent.
- diluent
- Fluids with high concentration of protein and cellular debris that have escaped from the blood vessels and have been deposited in tissues or on tissue surfaces.
- exudates
- A sac filled with blood that may be the result of trauma.
- hematoma
- A term used to describe a blood sample in which the red blood cells have ruptured.
- hemolyzed
- A cylindrical glass or plastic tube used to deliver fluids.
- pipet
- Substances added to a specimen to prevent deterioration of cells or chemicals.
- preservatives
- A private or hospital-based laboratory that performs a wide variety of tests, many of them specialized; physicians oten send specimens collected in the office to referral laboratories for testing.
- referral laboratory
- The ability of the eye to distinguish two objects that are very close together; the sharpness of an image.
- resolution
- A sample of body fluid, waste product, or tissue that is collected for analysis.
- Specimen
- A direction that an action is to be taken quickly an order found on a laboratory requistion indication that the test must be done immediately.
- stat
- A substance that is known to cause birth defects.
- teratogenic
- an agent that inhibits bacterial growth that can be used on human tissue
- antiseptic
- The point of forking or separating into tow branches.
- bifurcation
- The percentage by volume of packed red blood cells in a given sample of blood after centrifugation.
- hematocrit
- A situation in which the concentration of blood cells is increased in proportion to the plasma
- hemoconcentration
- The destruction or dissolution of red blood cells, with subsequent release of hemoglobin
- hemolysis
- The liquid portion of whole blood that contains active clotting agents.
- plasma
- The liquid portion of whole blood that remains after the blood has clotted.
