not made up of or containing cells
Saprophyte
any organism, such as bacteria, that lives upon dead or decaying organic matter.
Flora
the collective organisms of a given locale
Cariogenic
adjective to indicate a conduciveness to the initiation of dental caries, such as a cariogenic biofilm or a cariogenic food.
intermicrobial matrix
material present between bacteria in dental biofilm; derived from saliva, gingival exudate. and microorganisms.
Food impaction
the forceful wedging of food into the peroiodontium by occlusal forces.
Biofilm
matrix-enclosed bacterial populations adherent to each other andor to surfaces or interfaces.
Leukocyte
white blood corpuscle capable of ameboid movement; functions to protect the body against infection and disease.
Aerobe
herterotrophic microorganism that can live and grow in the presence of free oxygen: some are obligate, others facultative; adj. aerobic
Mycoplasma
pleomophic, gram-negitive bacteria that lack cell walls, many are regular oral cavity residents; some are pathogenic
Cariogenesis
development of dental caries
Parasite
plant or animal that lives upon or within anothr living orgganism and draws its nourishment therefrom; may be obligate or facultative; adj. parasitic
Maturation
stage or process of attaining maximal develpment, become mature.
Heterotrophic
Not self-sustaining; feeding on others.
Microbiota
the microscopic living organisms of a region.
Adsorption
Attachment of one substance to the surface of another; the action of a substance in attracting and holding other materials or particles on its surface
pleomorphism
assumption of various distinct forms by a single organism or within a species; adj. pleomorphic
Infection
invasion and multiplication of a microorganism in body tissues
calculogenic
adjective applied to dental biofilm that is conducive to the formation of calculus
Obligate
ability to survive only in a particular environment; opposite of facultative.
Materia alba
white or cream colored cheesy mass that can collect over dental biofilm on unclean, neglected teeth; it is composed of food debris, mucin, and bacteria.
Pathogen
disease-producing agent or microorganism; adj; pathogenic
Oral Flora
the various bacteria and other micorscopic organisms that inhabit the oral cavity. Certain organisms specifically reside in certain parts of example tongue, on the mucosa, or in the gingival sulcus
Anaerobe:
herterotrophic microorganism that lives and grown in complete absence of oxygen; some are obligate, others facultative adj. anaerobic
Facultative
able to live under more than one specific set of environmentsl conditions; contrast with obligate.
Micororganism
minute living organisms, usually microscopic; includes bacteria, rickettsiae, viruses, fungi and protozoa
Pleomorphism
assumption of various distinct froms by a single organism or within a species; adj. pleomorphic
Calculogenesis
formation of calculus
