Troubles on the frontier
Wating for the British at New Orleans thousands of Frontiersmen, hundreds of African Americans, & Filipino Ameicans volunteered and dug trenches to defend themselves. In 1815 British tried to overrun Jackson's line. Made several attempts and all failed. More than 2000 British died. Only 7 American casualties. Known as the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson became a nationa hero. The battle of New Orleans took place 2 weeks after the US & Britain signed a peace treaty ending war.

In 1814 Britain & allies defeateed France. Britain now could send troops to the US. Summer 1814 - British ships sailed into Chesapeake Bay & soldiers came ashore 30 miles from Washington D.C. Battle ensued in Bladensburg, MD. Ameicans lost & British were on the march to Washington D.C. Dolley Madison, James Madison's wife was home at the president's mansion. She gathered important papers of GW and fled south.Britsih burned the President's mansion & other buildings.

William Hull led American troops into Canada from Detriot. Going up against the Canadian who had only a few untrianed troops to fight. General Isaac Brock trocked the Americans because he dressed his soldiers in red cloaks to make the Americans think the British were helping them. Let a false "secret" message fall into Hull's hands - said more then 5,000 Native Americans were fighting with Brock (lie). Tricked work- Hull retreated/invasion of Canada failed.
Describe war in the West
Signed on Dec 24, 1814 both sides agreed to return matters to how they were before the war. INn 1818 - both countries set the border between Canada & the US at 49 N latitude.

Most outspoken war hawk who was from Kentucky. He wanteed war. He also wanted revenge on Britain for siezing ships. He wanted an excuse to conquer Canada.

Called- the prophet- siad his sould da taken a journey to the spirit world/learned the path all Native Americans should take if they were to live happily. Said Native Americans must give up white ways. Lastly no longer trade with settlers.

Reasons why US was not ready for war
Nickname was "Mr. Madison's War". Meeting to protest the war. Met in Hartford, CT in Dec. 1814. Most were Federalists & disliked the Republican President & the war. Issues with war. British blockade hurt New ENgland;s sea trade. Felt the South & the West had more to gain if the US won land in Florida & Canada. Meeting became known as the Hartfor Convention. Threatened to leave the UNion if the war continued. Meeting ended with news of peace teaty. Federalist Party ended with the end of the war. Peace talks held in Ghent, Belgium.
New Englanders protesting war
From Washington, British marcheed north to Baltimore. Key defense was fort McHenry. From evening of Sept 13 until dawn on Sept 14 British rockets bombarded the harbor. American victory. Francis Scott Key wrote a poem about the bombardment.
Bombing of Baltimore
The US could sieze Florida from Spain, an ally of Britain. Also claimed Britain was arming Native Americans on the frontier encouraging them to attack settlers.
