My English Vocabulary

Words I've come across, whose meaning is new for me. I prefer adding words by using only lowercase letters.

aloof
Having no need, desire, or much (if any) awareness of other people and social relationships.
antler
Branched, bony headgear arising from the frontal bones of male cervids (eg red deer).
upstage
The area of the stage away from the audience; toward the rear of the stage.
outshine
Shine brighter than: "What star outshines the sun?" + Attract more attention and praise than others.
pinprick
A minor annoyance. + Small puncture (as if made by a pin).
eyesore
Something, such as a distressed building, that is unpleasant or offensive to view..
unbecoming
Not in accord with the standards implied by one's character or position.
stroll
To travel from place to place seeking work or gain.
maimed
Injured badly by violence.
stowaway
A person who hides aboard a ship or other conveyance in order to obtain free passage.
kettle
A metal pot, usually with a lid, for boiling or stewing.
stew
To cook (food) by boiling slowly.
stalking
Criminal activity consisting of the repeated following and harassing of another person.
falter
Move hesitatingly, as if about to give way.
lure
To attract by wiles or temptation; entice.
wile
Trickery: the use of tricks to deceive someone (usually to extract money from them).
tread water
Expend effort that maintains one's status but does not make much progress toward a goal, as in He was just treading water from paycheck to paycheck.
red herring
Something that draws attention away from the central issue.
aloft
In or into a high place; high or higher up.
hoard
A hidden fund or supply stored for future use; a cache.
uptight
Rigidly conventional, as in manners, opinions, and tastes.
pimple
A small swelling of the skin, usually caused by acne.
whin
To complain or protest in a childish fashion. # To produce a sustained noise of relatively high pitch: jet engines whining.
paramount
Of chief concern or importance.
maul
To handle roughly: The package was mauled by the careless messenger.
