- lasts from 1846- 1848 and 73,000 people voluntered for the U.S. army Taylor moves south to take Mexican cities and the first city he tatkes is Palo Alto. Col. Kearney takes troops to capture city of Santa Fe. Takes city without firing a shot because the Mexican army left. They then send troops into California and the settlers revolt against Mexican rule adn have own fight for independence they were led by John Freemont

- they placed law on imported goods which angered the settlers and the gov was telling them what they could and could not do which made them even more mad
