nervous system
is a complex, highly organized system that coordinates all of the activities of the body
neuron
nerve cell, it consists of a cell body containing a nucleus
nerves
are combination of many nerve fibers located outside the brain and spinal cord.
central nervous system
consists of the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
consists of the somatic and autonomic nervous system
autonomic nervous system
is and important part of the peripheral nervous system
brain
is a mass of nerve tissue well protected by membranes and the cranium
cerebrum
the largest and highest section of the brain
cerebellum
the section below the back of the cerebrum
diencephalon
the section located between the cerebrum and midbrain
thalamus
acts as a relay center and directs sensory impulses to the cerebrum
hypothalamus
regulates and controls the autotomic nervous system, temp., appetite, water balance, sleep, and blood vessel constriction and dilation.
Midbrain
the section located below the cerebrum at the top of the brain stem
pons
the section located below the midbrain and in the brain stem
medulla oblongata
the lowest part of the brain stem
spinal cord
continues down from the nedulla oblogata and ends at the first or second lumbar vertebrae
meninges
are three membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord
ventricles
hollow spaces the connect with each other and with the space under the arachonoid membrane
cerebrospinal fluid
curculates continually between the ventricles and through the subarachnoid space
sympathetic and parasympathetic
usually work together to maintain a balanced state in the body and control incoluntary bdy functionsa at the proper rates.
cerebral palsy
is the disturbance in voluntary muscle action and is caused by brain damage
cerbrovascular accident
also called a stroke occurs when the blood flow to the barin is impaired resulting is a lack oxygen and destruction of the brain tissue
encephalitis
is an inflammation of the brain and is caused by a virus
epilepsy
seizure is a brain disorder accociated with abnormal electrical impulses in the neruons of the brain
hydrocephalus
is an excessive accumilation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles and in some cases the subarachnoid space of the brain
meningitis
is an inflammation of the memimges of the brain and or spinal cord and is cause by a virus
multiple sclerosis
is a chronic progressive disabling condition resulting from a degeneration of the mylein sheath in the central nervous system
neuralgia
is a nerve pain
paralysis
usually results from a brain of spinal cord injury that destroys neurons
parkinson's disease
is achronic progressive condition involving degereration of the brain cells usually is persons over fifty yrs of age
shingles
is an acute inflammation of the nerve cells and is cause by the herpes virus which also causes chickenpox
