Mother and mother's blood. No father. he belonged to a different longhouse family.

PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN YOUR LONGHOUSE ARE NOT NECESSARILY A MEMBER OF YOUR LONGHOUSE FAMILY.
Fireside Family
mother, father, children in a seperate compartment of the longhouse.
Extendend Family
parents, children and other close relatives (grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins)- blood is the important tie.
Nuclear Family
a family unit consisting of a mother, father and their children- marriage is the most important tie.

absolute and relative
every place on earth has a location. Each place will have:
absolute location-exact place on a map
relative location-position of a place in relation to other places.

Political Science
the study of government systems.

Democracy, Monarchy, Republic and Oligarchy/Anarchy.
Myth
is a story handed down from generation to generation.
Secondary Source
The writing and interpretation of historians and other writers. These sources such as textbooks and articles often provide convenient summaries of the information contained in primary sources.
Primary Source
For a person who studies history, a primary source is a document or written record which comes directly from the period of time understudy.
Native Americans
The first settlers who came to North America from Asia; the indigenous people.
Monotheistic
A religion whose faith has a single God. ex. Judaism, Islam, Christianity.
Polytheists
A religion whose faith has more than one god.
Matrilineal
Mother's side of the family or your mother's blood.
Longhouse
The structure of the woodland Indian such as the Iroquois in which several families lived. It was made of tree branches and other forest greens, with a rounded roof.
League of Five Nations
A confederation of Indian tribes, including Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and the Mohawk. They were often called the League of Iroquois.
Iroquois confederacy
A Native American political organization formed in 1577 by the Mohawk Hiawatha, joining the Mohawk into confederation with the Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, Oneida and later Tuscarora. They waged a war of virtual extermination against Huron and Mohegan Indians. The Iroquois were pro-British during the French and Indian War, and entered into aliance with the US during the Revolution. Their confederation was dissolved by the New York State legislature in 1847 and today they live peacefully on several large reservations straddling the US-Canadian border. They proudly note that they were the first allies of the US.
Indigenous
The original inhabitants of an area. The people who settled the lands of North and South America are reffered to as Native Americans or indigenous people.
History
the study of past events.
Historian
A person who studies, writes about and analyzes past events.
Geography
This is the study of the earth and its features, as well as, where people live.
Federal Government
a political system in which a union of states recognizes a central authority while retaining certain residual powers of government.
Environment
The toatl surrounding including physical, social and cultural conditions. These conditions affect the individual and the communtiy.
Economics
The study of how people produce, distribute and consume resources in order to staisfy their wants; and also how people make choices in trying to satisfy their wants with limited resources.

A total way of life.
Confederation
A loose government unit where the parts, such as the states in America would retain most powers with a few keypowers left to the central government.
Civilization
A whole society that shares a culture such as the same language, religion, art, music, family rules and guidelines, government and means of communication.
Cartography
the study of map making.
Artifact
An object made by a human such as a tool.
Archaeologist
a person who systematically studies the artifacts of people to understand their existense as a culture.
