- bronchi
- The passages that branch from the trachea and direct air into the lungs.
- cilia
- Tiny hairlike extensions of cells that can move together like whips.
- diaphragm
- A large, dome-shaped muscle that plays an important role in breathing.
- larynx
- The voice box, located in the top part of the trachea, under the epiglottis.
- lungs
- The main organs of the respiratory system.
- vocal cords
- Folds of connective tissue that stretch across the opening of the larynx and produce a person's voice.
- alveoli
- Tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gases between the air and blood.
- pharynx
- The throat; part of both the respiratory and digestive systems.
- trachea
- The windpipe; a passage through which air moves in the respiratory system.
- respiration
- The process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain; also the process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions in the cells.
