- Number of bones
- ~206
- Skull, thoracic, vertebral column etc.
- Axial (~80)
- bones of arms, legs, connecting bones to axial
- appendicular
- long, slender, shaft and 2 ends
- long bones
- boxed/cubed shaped, have very dense outside filled with spongy bones in middle
- short bones
- flat, thin, roughly parallel surfaces of compact bones, spongey bone sandwich
- flat bones
- no other names, miscellaneous bones with complex shapes and structures
- Irregular bones
- small, flat, round, develop around and in tendons near joints
- sesamoid bones
- Extra bones, small flat oddly shaped bones found between suter lines in skull
- Sutural bones
- at ends of bones
- epiphysis
- shaft in between two ends
- diaphysis
- covers each epiphysis, type of hyalin cartilage, antifriction device
- articular cartilage
- important for regeneration of bones, covers shaft of bone
- periosteum
- plates of bones found in sponget bones- lined with cell layer called endosteum
- trabeculae
- only on inner and outer surfaces or if you've had injury to bone. Only cell type that can make new bone
- osteoblasts
- mitotically active cell, daughter cell becomes osteoblast, found in inner layer of periosteum
- osteoprogenitor
- mature bone cell, can't make bone anymore, moitors protein and mineral content of bone
- osteocyte
- secretes acid into boney matrix causing breakdown, to get more Ca into the blood stream and replace bones
- osteoclasts
- osteoblasts replacing cells osteoclasts destroyed
- remodeling
- bone put down in layers outside to inside
- Lamellae
