- optical mouse
- Mouse that uses devices, such as optical sensors or lasers, that emit and sense light to detect the mouse's movement
- speech recognition
- Computer's capability of distinguishing spoken words. Also called voice recognition
- trackball
- Stationary pointing device with a ball on its top; the pointer is moved by rotating the ball
- wheel
- Input device that is similar to a steering wheel and that is used to simulate driving a vehicle
- audio input
- To enter any sound, such as speech, music, and sound effects, into a computer
- joystick
- Pointing device used for games or flight and driving simulations that is a vertical lever mounted on a base. A user moves the lever in different directions to control the actions of a simulated vehicle or player
- input device
- Any hardware component that allows users to enter data or instructions (such as programs, commands, and user responses) into a computer. Popular input devices include the keyboard, mouse, stylus, digital pen, microphone, digital camera, and scanner
- scanner
- Light-sensing input device that reads printed text and graphics, and then translates the results into a form the computer can process. Also called optical scanner
- ergonomics
- The science of incorporating comfort, efficiency, and safety into the design of workplace items
- Mechaniccal mouse
- Mouse that has a rubber or metal ball on its underside. When the ball rolls in a certain direction, electronic circuits in the mouse translate the movement of the mouse into signals a computer can process
- digital pen
- Pointing device that looks like a ballpoint pen, but uses pressure, instead of ink, to write text and draw lines. Also called stylus
- output device
- Any hardware component that conveys information to one or more people
