- Input Device
- Any hardware component that allows users to enter data or instructions (such as programs, commands, and user responses) into a computer. Popular input devices include the keyboard, mouse, stylus, digital pen, microphone, digital camera, and scanner
- Bar Code Reader
- Optical reader that uses laser beams to read bar codes.
- OCR Devices
- Optical character recognition devices that include small optical scanners for reading characters and sophisticated software to analyze what is read
- Monitor
- Plastic or metal case that houses a display device as a separate peripheral. Desktop computers typically use monitors as their display devices

- Stationary pointing device with a ball on its top; the pointer is moved by rotating the ball
- Dot-Matrix Printer
- Type of impact printer that produces printed images when tiny wire pins on a print head mechanism strike an inked ribbon. When the inked ribbon presses against a sheet of paper, it creates dots that form characters and graphics

- Light-sensing input device that reads printed text and graphics, and then translates the results into a form the computer can process. Also called optical scanner

- A single point in an electronic image. Pixel is short for picture element
- Line Printer
- Type of high-speed impact printer that prints an entire line at a time
- Laser Printer
- Type of high-speed, high-quality nonimpact printer that creates images using a laser beam and powdered ink, called toner. The laser beam produces an image on a special drum inside the printer. The light of the laser alters the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits, causing toner to stick to the drum. The toner then is transferred to paper through a combination of pressure and heat

- Type of nonimpact color printer that produces photo-lab-quality pictures

- To capture full-motion images into a computer and store them on a storage medium such as a hard disk or DVD
- LCD (liquid crystal display)
- Type of display that uses a liquid compound to present information on a screen. Computer LCDs typically have fluorescent tubes that emit light waves toward the liquid crystal cells, which are sandwiched between two sheets of material. When an electrical charge passes through the cells, they twist, causing some light waves to be blocked and allowing others to pass through, thereby creating images on a screen

- Touch-sensitive display device with which users interact by touching their fingers to words, pictures, numbers, or locations identified on the screen
- Mechanical Mouse
- Mouse that has a rubber or metal ball on its underside. When the ball rolls in a certain direction, electronic circuits in the mouse translate the movement of the mouse into signals a computer can process
