- ATR
- Stands for audiotape recorder.
- Windscreen
- Acoustic foam rubber that is put over the entire microphone to cut down wind noise.
- Polar Pattern
- The two-dimensional representation of the microphone pickup pattern.
- Mini Plug
- Connector used for some consumer audio equipment.
- Ribbon Microphone
- High-quality, highly sensitive microphone for critical sound pickup in the studip, usually for recording string instruments
- Dynamic Microphone
- A relatively rugged microphone.Good for outdoor use.
- Mini Disc (MD)
- A small optical disc that can store one hour of CD-quality audio.
- Omnidirectional
- Pickup pattern with which the microphone can hear equally well from all directions.
- Volume-Unit (VU) Meter
- Measures volume units, the relative loudness of amplified sound.
- DAT
- Stands for digital audiotape.
- Hypercardioid
- A very narrow pickup pattern with a long reach.The mic can also hear sounds coming directly from the back
- Sweetening
- The postproduction manipulation of recorded sound.
- Fadar
- A volume control that works by sliding a button horizontally along a specific scale.Identical in function to a pot. Also called slide fadar.
- Pop Filter
- A wire-mesh screen attached to the front of a mic that reduces breath pops and sudden air blasts.
- Lavaliere
- A small microphone that is clipped to clothing. Also called lav.

- The territory around the microphone within which the mic can hear well.

- Connector for video and audio equipment.
- Digital Versatile disc (DVD)
- The standard DVD can store 4.7 gigabytes of video and/or audio information.

- High-quality, sensitive microphone for critical sound pickup.

- Pickup pattern with which the microphone can hear best from the front.

- Professional threewire connector for audio cables.

- Heart-shaped pickup pattern of a unidirectional microphone.
