- What are materials made of?
- All materials are made of atoms
- What is the atomic radius?
- The atomic radius is the size of the atom.
- What is the nucleus?
- The atoms nucleus contains protons and neutrons.
- What does the nucleus contain?
- Positivly charged protons and uncharged or nutural charged neutrons.
- What are the nucleons?
- Protons and neutrons together are called nucleons.
- What is chemical bonding?
- chemical bonding can be explained as the end product of the electrical forces of attraction and repulision between oppositely charged or similarly charged particles of matter
- What are the two groups of bonds?
-
Primary bonds
Secondary bonds - What are primary bonds and what are they account for?
- Primary bonds account for the strength and hardness of most structural materials
- Name the primary bonds?
-
Metallic Bonds
Covalent Bonds
Ionic Bonds - How would you describe Metallic bonds?
- They allow the atom to move their relative position which creates a type of electric field. They are the weekest of the primary bonds, and have good ductility and electrical conductivity because of the free movement of electrons in the metallic bond.
- How would you describe covalent bonds?
- Covalent bonds are formed between two atoms when the atoms share there valence electrons. In general organic materials are formed by covalent bonds, they are the strongest force of attraction.
- How would you describe Ionic bonds?
- Ionic bonds are when elements actually transfer electrons to other elements. In general inorganic materials form ionic bonds.
- What are secondary bonds?
-
Secondary are weaker bonds and include:
Van de Waal Bonds - How would you describe Van der Waal bonds?
- Van der Waal bonds join molecules or groups of atoms by weak electrostatic attractions, they can dramatically change the properties of materials such as polymers.
- What is mixed bonding and give an example?
- Mixed bonding is when compounds are bonded together by a combination of two of the other four types of bonds such as PVC
- What are the three forms of matter in ?
-
Liquid
Gas
Solid - What are the differences between gasses, Liquids and solids?
- Gasses have on order or no repetitive crystalline patern at all,the atoms randomly fill up the space to which the gas is confined.
- What are phases?
- A state which different substances can go through such as water can be liquid, solid, gas
