- location
- the place where something is found
- mountain range
- a large group of mountains
- continents
- the large land areas of the earth, such as Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica, Europe, North America and South America
- globe
- a model of the earth
- hemisphere
- half of the globe when it is divided into either northern or southern halves or eastern or western halves
- equator
- imaginary line that is halfway between the north pole and the south pole
- map
- a picture that shows the location of things
- nation
- an area of land with its own people and laws, also called a country
- border
- a line on a map that shows where a state or nation ends
- map title
- tells what the map is about
- map key
- also called the legend, tells the meanings of the symbols used on a map
- distance scale
- a map feature used to measure the distance between two places; it tells what the distance on the map equals on the real earth
- compass rose
- the drawing on a map that shows N,S, E, and W, which stands for North, south, east adn west.
- cardinal directions
- the four main directions, north, south, east and west
- President
- the leader of the United States
- population
- the number of people living in a place.
- capital city
- a city in which government leaders meet and work
- suburb
- a small community that is close to a city
- rural
- the countryside, away from cities adn large towns
- history
- the story of what has happened in a place
- pioneer
- a person who helps settle a new land
- ancestor
- someone in a person's family who lived long ago, such as a great-great-grandparent
- founder
- a person who starts something, such as a business or settlement
- settlement
- a small village built by the first people to live in a new place
- time line
- a drawing that shows when and in what order events took place
- sequence
- time order, the order in which events took place
- primary sources
- records made by people who saw or took part in an event, such as a newspaper story, journal, picture or painting
- secondary source
- record that was written by someone who was not present when the event took place
