- genre
- A French word that means the type of literature, e.g. fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.
- simile
- A comparison of of two unlikely things that uses the words like or as
- falling action
- The events that follow after the turning point
- dialogue
- A conversation between two or more people or characters. In literature, it is shown with quotation marks: "...."
- turning point or climax
- The moment of greatest tension in a story, when the outcome of the story hangs in the balance. The point in the story when the reader knows who won the conflict.
- Appendix
- A part of a book, (found in the back), that gives additional information or directs the readers to other sources where they can find out more
- setting
- The time and place in which a story occurs
- footnote
- A printed note or definition placed below the text at the bottom of the page
- biography
- A nonfiction story in which the writer tells about the life of another person.
- 3rd person omniscient
- A point of view in which the narrator is not one of the characters and while telling the story also tells the thoughts and feelings of more than one of the characters
- comprehension
- To show that you understand something
- resolution
- The is also called the conclusion or ending of a story
- construct meaning
- To make meaning of something you have read
- antonym
- Words with opposite or very different meanings
- metaphor
- A comparison of two unlikely things that does NOT use the words like or as
- autobiography
- A form of nonfiction in which the author tells his or her own life story
- literal meaning
- The actual or real meaning of a word or phrase
- stanza
- A paragraph is a poem
- hyperbole
- A figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotions, make a point, or show humor
- Glossary
- A part of a book, (found in the back), that contains difficult words or terms and their meanings
- imagery
- When poets and writers use words to help the readers visualize their settings, characters, feelings etc. Poets often use our senses to create an image based upon how the subject looks, feels, smells, sounds and tastes.
- personification
- Giving human qualities or traits to animals, things or ideas
- mood
- The feeling that is created in the reader, or the way that a story or poem makes the reader feel.
- drawing a conclusion
- Same thing as making an inference
- inference
- A conclusion or guess that is determined or based upon the evidence in the story
- Table of Contents
- a part of a book, (found in the front), that helps readers locate where chapters, stories, poems,etc. can be found
- root word
- The basic word you start with before adding prefixes or suffixes
- point of view
- Who is telling the story. Is the story being told by one of the characters in the story, or is it someone outside the story?
- e.g.
- An abbreviation that means: "For example..."
- exposition
- In the beginning of a book or story, when the author introduces the setting, characters and conflict
- text features
- captions, bold print, italicized words, titles, subtitles, graphs, headings, boxed information etc.
- theme
- The writer's message to the reader, or the main idea of a story or poem
- 3rd person limited
- A point of view in which the narrator is not one of the characters and while telling the story tells the inner thoughts and feelings of only one of the characters
- suffix
- A syllable, (which has its own meaning), joined at the END of a word to change that word's mean and part of speech
- Index
- A part of a book, (at the back), that tells you on which pages you can find certain terms, words,people, and events
- implied or implicit meaning
- When an author or speaker does NOT directly state what they mean
- text structures
- The way in which an author presents the information in his/her story or article. Some of the most common text structures are: chronological order, problem and solution, cause and effect, compare and contrast
- prefix
- A syllable (which has its own meaning), joined to the BEGINNING of a word to change that word's meaning.
- chronological order
- (Time Order) Events are arranged in the order in which they happened
- author's purpose
- The reason an author writes an article, or story. The three most common are: to inform, to persuade, or , to entertain. MOST FICTION IS WRITTEN TO ENTERTAIN
- cutaway
- A diagram that slices an object in half so that a reader can see what is inside
- 1st person point of view
- The narrator is a character in the story. ( I, me, my, we, our )
- format
- How information appears on a page. The way in which an author organizes the information to present it to the readers
- conflict
- The problem that faces the main character
- i.e.
- an abbreviation that means: " that is... " or "in other words"
- symbols
- Anything that stand for or represents something else.
- caption
- The words underneath or beside a picture or photograph that describes what is in the picture
- synonym
- Words that have similar meanings
- rising action
- The events that lead up to the turning point
- plot
- All the events that happen in a story from the beginning to end
