Amitriptyline (Elavil)
inhibit reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine at the presynaptic terminus, also have anticholinergic properties via blockade of muscarinic receptors, and may have some alpha-1-adrenergic and H1-receptor blockade
Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
Norepinehprine and dopamine reuptake inhibition (no effect on serotonin)
Citalopram (Celexa)
Seritonin reuptake inhibitors. Minimal effect on NE reuptake and minimal effect on muscarinic receptors, thus giving SSRIs a better side effect profile and making it superior to TCAs
Clomipramine (Anafranil)
most serotonin specific of the Heterocylcic agents (HCAs)
Desipramine (Norpramin)
least anticholinergic of the HCAs
Doxepine (Sinequan)
antihistaminergic and anticholinergic
Duloxetine (Cymbalta)
inhibiting CNS reuptake of serotonin and NE
Es citalopram (Lexapro)
Most serotonin specific of the SSRIs
Fluoxetine (prozac)
See Citalopram
Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
Inhibition of the serotonin reuptake pump. Causes an increased concentration of synaptic serotonin.
Imipramine (Tofranil)
Inhibit the re-uptake of norepinephrine, dopamine, and/or serotonin. May also effect H1 and muscarinic receptors. Response takes 2-4 weeks.
Mirtazapine (Remeron)
Blocks pre-synaptic alpha-2 receptors (normally inhibit the release of norepi and serotonin). Mirtazapine also blocks the post synaptic 5HT-2 and 5HT-3 receptor.
Nefazodone (Serzone)
Blocks post synaptic 5HT-2 receptors, presynaptic serotonin reuptake pump, and presynaptic norepinephrine reuptake.
Nortriptyline (Pamelor)
Prevents the reuptake of 5HT and NE into the presynaptic neuron by blocking reuptake transporters. Does not effect dopamine reuptake.
Paroxetine (Paxil)
Reversibly blocks the reuptake of serotonin into the post-synaptic neuron.
Phenelzine (Nardil)
Inhibits monoamine oxidase, preventing the destuction of dopamine, serotonin, and norepeinephrine. This provides more available neurotransmitters for synaptic transmission.
Protriptyline (Vivactil)
Blocks the reuptake of 5HT and NE from the synaptic cleft by reuptake transporters. Does not effect dopamine reuptake.
Sertraline (Zoloft)
selective presynaptic 5-HT reuptake - weakly affect NE & dopamine neuronal uptake
Tranylcypromine (Parnate)
nonhydrazine monoamine oxidase inhibitor - inc endogenous conc of Epi, NE, dopamine, and 5-HT via stoping presynaptic breakdown
Trazodone (Desyrel)
Inhibits reuptake of serotonin - acts as an agonist at higher doses and antagonizes serotonin at low doses. Sedation due to alpha-adrenergic blocking and histamine blockade
Venlafaxine (Effexor)
inhibit 5-HTand NE (dopamine weakly too)
