- Access
- Refers to the responsibility of those having data to control who is able to use that data.
- Access time
- The period between the time the computer requests data from a secondary storage device and the time the transfer of data is completed.
- Accounts payable
- The activity that shows the money a company owes to its suppliers for the materials and services it has received.
- Accounts receivable
- The activity that shows what money has been received or is owed by customers.
- Accuracy
- Relates to the responsibility of those who collect data to ensure that the data is correct.
- Active desktop
- The Windows dektop view in which ôactive contentö from Web pages is displayed.
- Active-matrix monitor
- Monitor in which each pixel is independently activated. More colors with better clarity can be displayed.
- Ada
- Procedural language named after an English countess regarded as the first programmer; was originally designed for weapons systems but has commercial uses as well. Because of its structured design, modules of a large program can be written, compiled, and tested separately before the entire program is put together.
- Adapter card
- Optional device that plugs into a slot inside the system unit. Ports on the board allow cables to be connected from the expansion board to devices outside the system unit.

- Programs that guard a computer system from viruses or other damaging programs.

- Java programs used on Web pages.

- Software with modules that have been preprogrammed to accomplish various tasks, such as calculation of overtime pay.
