Amplitude
The energy in a sound wave
Buoyancy
The upward force of water, another liquid, or air that keeps things afloat.
Chemical Change
A change that produces new matter with different properties from the original matter. Ex. Copper acetate
Color
Produced by the effect of waves of light striking the retina of the eye.
Contract
To shrink or decrease in size, as matter does when it cools.
Energy
The ability to do work, either to make an object move or change matter.
Expand
To increase in size, as most matter does when it is heated.
Filter
A tool used to separate things by size.
Force
Any push or pull that makes an object start moving, stop moving, speed up, slow down, or change direction.
Fossil Fuel
A substance such as coal or oil that formed millions of years ago from the remains of plants and animals. These fuels are nonrenewable resources, and when burned for energy, are major sources of pollution.
Frequency
The number of times a sound source vibrates in one second.
Gas
A state of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space and has not definite shape.
Heat
The movement of thermal energy from warmer to cooler objects.
Kinetic Energy
The energy an object has because it is moving.
Light
Form of energy that acts on the retina of the eye...light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed.
Liquid
A state of matter that takes up a definite amound of space but has not definite shape.
Mass
The amount of matter making up an object.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mixture
Two or more types of matter mixed together but keep their own properties.
Motion
Change of position or place; movement; moving.
Opaque
Completely blocking light from passing through an object
Physical Change
A change that begins and ends with the same type of matter.
Pitch
The highness or lowness of a sound as determined by its frequency.
Potential Energy
Energy that is stored or waiting to be used, giving an object the future ability to do work.
Reflection
The bouncing of light waves off a surface.
Refraction
The bending of light as it passes from one transparent material to the next.
Speed
The distance traveled in a certain amount of time.
Shape
The outward contour or outline, form, figure, appearance.
Size
Amound of surface or space a thing takes up
Solid
A state of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space.
Sound Wave
An area of bunched-up and spread-out air particles that moves outward in all directions from a vibrating object.
Translucent
Letting only some light through, so that objects on the other side appear blurry, cloudy.
Transparent
Letting light through, so that objects on the other side can be seen clearly.
Vibration
The back and forth motion of an object.
Weathering
The process of breaking down rocks into smaller pieces that create sediment.
Work
The use of force to move an object a certain distance.
