What do the colors on a map represent?
Green- heavy vegetation like forests, woodlands or orchards.

White- shows areas that are mostly clear of trees like fields, meadows, rocky slopes and other open areas.

Blue- water like a pond, lake. A blue band is a river and a blue line is a stream. If line is broken the stream does not flow all the time. If it is a swamp it is broken blue lines with tufts of grass.

Black- shows any think that is human made like Rail lines, bridges. All roads are parallel black lines. Solid lines are paved and graveled roads. Broken line is dirt road. A Single broken line is a hiking trail.

Brown is for contour lines. Represent elevation of land from sea level on a flat map. Every 5th contour line is darker. The increase by 50 feet.








How to you orient a map?
1. Look around for landmarks such as buildings, a bridge, or top of a hill. Turn the map until the symbols line up with the landscape features they represent.

2. with your compass rotate the cumpass housing until N (360*) touches the direction of travel arrow on map. Place the eded of the compass base plate alongside any magnetic north line on the map. Turn the map and compass as one until the compass needle lies directly over the orienting arrow in the compass houseing.

Make sure it is easy on the land. Try and use established campsites or on a surface that will not be harmed by your tent of footsteps. If you do move rocks or sticks you should put back in exact spot after you pack up and leave.

Stay away from dead trees or trees with limbs that could fall in a storm.

Look out for gullies that could fill up during a flash flood.

Look out for possible targes of lighting.
