- Satellite nation
- Countries dependent upon and dominated by the Soviet Union

- An effort to block the Soviets' attempts to spread their influence by creating alliances and supporting weaker countries

- The state of hostility short of direct military confrontation that developed between the two superpowers

- U2 Pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down and captured by the Soviets. He told the Soviets about the United States plans.The United States told the US people that it was just a weather plane shot down in order to cover up what they were really up to.
