Absolute URL
A URL that specifies the full path to the document page, which includes the domain name.
ACM
Association for Computing Machinery. A membership organization founded in 1947 dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of information processing
Aliasing
In computer graphics, the stair-stepped appearance of diagonal lines when there are not enough pixels in the image or on screen to represent them realistically.
Angle Brackets
The "" symbols. These symbols are commonly used to enclose a code of some type.
Animated GIF
A moving picture in GIF format, which is made up of a series of frames. When displayed, they provide a short animated sequence.
Anti-aliasing
Smoothing the jagged appearance of diagonal lines in a bitmapped image. The pixels that surround the edges of the line are changed to varying shades of gray or color in order to blend the sharp edge into the background.
Apache
A widely-used public domain, UNIX-based Web server.
Applet
A small application, such as a utility program or limited-function spreadsheet or word processor.
ASCII
Acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, which specifies the standard 7-bit character set.
Audio on Demand
The ability to start delivering an audio program to an individual Web browser whenever the user requests it.
Bandwidth
The transmission capacity of an electronic line such as a communications network, computer bus or computer channel.

Banner Ad
A graphic image used on Web sites to advertise a product. Banner ads are typically rectangles about 460 pixels wide by 60 pixels in height.
Bcc:
Blind Carbon Copy. The field in an e-mail header that names additional recipients for the message.
Bitmap file
A file that contains an image in one of various bitmap formats such as TIFF, GIF, JPEG and BMP
Bitmapped graphics
In computer graphics, a technique for representing a picture image as a matrix of dots.
Bricks and mortar
A store(shop, supermarket, department store, etc.) in the real world.
BMP file
BitMaP file. It is the Windows native bitmap format, and every Windows application has access to the BMP software routines in Windows that support it.
Bookmark
A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses(URLs) of favorite sites
Cache server
A dedicated network server or a service within a server that caches Web pages in order to speed up access to information that has already been retrieved bya a previous user.
Cascading Style Sheet
A style sheet format for HTML documents endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium. CSSI(version 1.0) provides hundreds of layout settings that can be applied to all the subsequent HTML pages that are downloaded
Cc:
Carbon copy. The field in an e-mail header that names additional recipients for the message.
CGI script
Common Gateway Interface script. A small program written in a language such as Perl, C or C++ that functions as the glue between HTML pages and other programs on the Web server.
Client
A client connects to a server, with which it exchanges information.
Clipboard
A reserved section of memory that is used as a temporary holding area when you copay and paste or cut and paste from one application to another
Clipping
cutting off the outer edges or boundaries of a word, signal or image
Coaxial cable
A high-capacity cable used in communications and video, commonly called co-ax. it contains an insulated solid or stranded wire surrounded by a solid or braided metallic shield, wrapped in a plastic cover
CobWeb
A Web page that has not been updated in a long time
Cookie
piece of data given to your browser by a web server, so that your browser will hand it back to the server with subsequent requests.
Dreamweaver
A web authoring program. it is a sophisticated program that is noted for many advanced features, include the "Roundtrip" capability that lets you seamlessly move back and forth and make changes in both the visual mode and HTML mode.
Drop shadow
makes elements look more three-dimensional and "pop out" of the picture. the Gaussin Blur filter is widely used to create this effect.
Dynamic HTML
A combination of HTML enhancements, style sheets, and scripts that allow for animations, interactions and dynamic updating of Web pages.
E-commerce
Doing business online, typically via the web.
E-mail attachment
A file that rides along with an e-mail message. can be of any time.
E-zine
Electronic magazine. a magazine or newsletter published online. also called webzine.
Ethernet
the most widely-used LAN access method, which is defined by the IEEE
Fax
FACSmimile. Originally called telecopying, it is the communication of a printed page between remote locations.
Firewall
A method for keeping a network secure. It can be implemented in a single router that filters out unwanted packets, or it may use a combination of technologies in routers and hosts.
Freeware
Software distributed without charge.
Gaussin blur
commonly used to blur an object. it may be used to blur the entire image or to produce a drop shadow effect.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. A popular raster graphics file format developed by CompuServe. Supports 8-bit color
GUI
Graphical User Interface
Home Page
the first page retrieved when accessing a web site. it serves as a table of contents to the rest of the pages on the site or other web sites
HREF
Hypertext REFerence. the mnemonic used to assign a hypertext address to an HTML document.
HTML
HyperText Markup Language. The underlying formatting for world wide web documents
HTTP
HyperText Transport Protocol. The system for requesting HTML documents from the world wide web
HTTPS
HyperText Transport Protocol Secure. The protocol for accessing a secure web server.

Interlaced GIF
a GIF image that comes into focus while it is being displayed.
Internet
A collection of interconnected networks which span the world
Intranet
An inhouse web site which serves the employees of an organization. Not accessible by the general public.
Hypertext
A system of "live" documents where a text file contains references to other documents that can be followed, thus linking documents to other related materials. The best known examples is HTML.
Java
A programming language for Internet and intranet applications from Sun. Java was modeled after C++, and Java programs can be called from within HTML documents or launched stand alone.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group.
LAN
Local Area Network, a LAN is a network contained within a single physical site (one or more buildings).
Linux
A version of UNIX that runs on PCs. Linux is open source software, which is freely available; however, the full distribution of Linux along with technical support and training are available for a fee from vendors such as Red Hat Software and Caldera.
Meta Tag
An HTML tag that ids the contents of a Web page. Using a format, meta tags contain such things as a general description of the page, keywords for search engines and copyright information.
MIDI
Musical Instrument Digital Interface.
MPEG
Moving Pictures Experts Group. Used for compressing videos, a lossy compression method, in other words, you lose some of the original image during compression.
MUD
MultiUser Dungeon. Interactive games played by many on the net.
Netiquette
NETwork etiquette. Proper manners when conferencing across the internet.
Newsgroup
A message board on the internet. AKA Internet discussion groups that focus on particular topics. Someone posts a question/topic and gets feedback/answers.
Online
Available for immediate use.
Operating system
The master control program that runs the computer. It is the first program loaded when the computer is turned on, and its main part, called the kernel, resides in memory at all times.
PAge source
AKA "source" and "document source", it is the HTML code of a web page.
PPI
Pixels per inch
Popmail
A program used to remotely read email across a network, often used in conjunction with SLIP. Uses the POP protocol.
Protocol
Any standard for the exchange of information, a protocol defines the specific wording and control flow for communications between two or more programs, devices, or systems.
Relative URL
A URL that specifies only the document name. The full path is implied by the current document

Software that searches for data based on some criteria
SGML
Standard Generalized Markup Language. An ISO standard for defining the format in a text document. The HTML format used on the Web is an SGML document that uses a fixed set of tags.
Site Map
A hierarchial diagram of the pages on a Web site.
Snail Mail
The U.S. Postal service or other ofrm of ground mail. As opposed to E-Mail.
Static HTML
An HTML page that never changes. See dynamic HTML
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, a Networking standard commonly used on the internet.
Telecommuting
Working at home and communicating with the office by electronic means.
Teleconferencing
Long distance conferencing. An interactive communications session between three or more users that are geographically separated.
Transparent GIF
Allows one of the colors to be made transparent and take on the background color of the underlying page or window.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator
Vector Graphics
A technique for representing a picture as points, lines and other geometric entities. For more details about this technique. Contrast with bitmapped graphics.
VRML
Virtual Reality Modeling Languate. A 3-D graphics language used on the web. After downloading a VRML page, its contents can be viewed, rotated and manipulated
WAN
Wide Area Network. generally a network connecting several physically distant locations, as opposed to a LAN.
WAV file
The native digital audio format used in windows. use the .WAV extension and allow different sound qualities to be recorded
Web
World Wide Web, also known as WWW, or W3
Web browser
The program that serves as your front end to the World Wide Web on the internet.
Webmaster
A person responsible for the implementation of a Web site. Webmasters must be proficient in HTML as well as one or more scripting and interface languages such as JavaScript and Perl. They may also have experience with more that one type or Web server.
World Wide Web
internet facility that links documents locally and remotely.
