- Critical Height
- The fall height below which a life-threatening head injury would not be expected to occur.
- Designated Play Surface
- Any eleveated surface for standing, walking, sitting or climbing, or a flat surface greater that 2" wide having an angle less than 30 degrees from horizontal.
- Embankment Slide
- A slide that follows the contour of the ground and at no point is the bottom of the chute greater than 12" above the surrounding ground.
- Entrapment
- Any condition that impedes withdrawal of a body part that has penetrated an opening.
- Footing
- A means for anchoring playground equipment to the ground.
- Guardrail
- An enclosing device around an elevated platform that is intended to prevent inadvertent falls from the platform.
- Infill
- Material(s)used in a protective barrier to prevent a user from passing through the barrier e.g., vertical bars, lattice, solid panel. etc.
- Loose-Fill Surfacing Material
- A material used for protective surfacing in the use zone that consits of loose particles such as sand, gravel, wood fibers, or shredded rubber.
- Non-Rigid Component
- A component of playground equipment that significantly deforms or deflects during the normal use of the equipment.
- Preschoo-Age Children
- 2 to 5 years of age.
- Protective Barrier
- An enclosing device around an elevated platform that is intended to prevent both inadvertent and deliberate attempts to pass through the barrier.
- Protective Surfacing
- Surfacing material in the use zone that conforms to the recommendations in Section 4.5 of the handbook.
- Roller Slide
- A slide that has a chute consisting of a series fo iindividual rollers over which the user travels.
- School-Age Children
- 5 through 12 years of age.
- Slide Chute
- The inclined sliding surface of a slide.
- Stationary Play Equipment
- Any play structure which does not move or does not have components that move during its intended use.
- Tot Swing
- A swing generally appropriate for children under 4 years of age that provides support on all sides of the occupant.
- Tube Slide
- A slide in which the chute consists of a totally enclosed tube or tunnel.
- Unitary Surfacing Material
- A manufactured material used for protective surfacing in the use zone that may be rubber tiles, mats or a combination of rubber-like materials held in place by a binder that may be poured in place at the playground site and cures to form a unitary shock absorbing surface.
- Upper Body Equipment
- Equipment designed to support a child by the hands only (e.g., horizontal ladder, overhead swinging rings.)
- Use Zone
- The surfae under and around a piece of equipment onto which a child falling from or exiting fromt he equipment would be expected to land.

- Accessible Route
- A continuous unobstructed path connecting all accessible elements and spaces of a building or facility. Inside the boundary of the play area, accessible routes may include platforms, ramps, elevators, lifts. Outside the boundary of the play area, accessible routes may also include parking access aisles, curb ramps, crosswalks at vehicular ways, walks, ramps, and lifts.
- Composite Play Structure
- Two or more play structures attached or functionally linked, to create one integral unit that provides more than one play activity.
- Elevated Play Component
- A play component that is approached above or below grade and that is part of a composite play structure and can be approached from a platform or deck consisting of two or more play components attached or functionally linked to create an integrated unit providing more than one play activity.
- Ground Level Play Component
- A play component that is approached and exited at the ground level.
- Play Component
- An element intended to generate specific opportunities for play, socialization, or learning. Play components may be manufactured or natural, and may be stand alone or part of a composite play structure.
-
Technical Requirements for Play Components.
The guidelines provide design criteria fro play components considered essential for accessibility, including:
Name 5 -
1) Space for wheelchair maneuvering to and from the play component
2) Wheelchair space at the play component
3) Height of entry point or seats
4) Provision of transfer supports (such as a gripable edge or some other means of support)
5) Reach range heights for manipulative and interactive features of play components based on the age of the intended user group (as shown on the table below)
AGE HIGH REACH (MAX) LOW REACH(MIN)
2-5 36" 20"
5-12 40" 18" -
ASTM F 1487
Accessibility - For platforms that are accessible to children with disabilities only by means of transfer - that is for those platforms that cannot be accessed by wheelchairs - the requirement that manipulatable equipment be placed within reach ranges of a wheelchair users is not applicable
-
ASTM F 1487
Balance Beams - The fall height of balance beams is the distance between the highest part of the walking surface and the protective surface below. Previously the fall height had not been specified.
- Climbers used for access/egress from or to composite play structures.
- The fall height is the distance between the highest part of the climber intended for foot support and the protective surface below. Previously the fall height had not been specified.
-
ASTM F 1487
Designated Play Surface - The definition was revised for clarification. The minimum area of a designated play surface is now set as 2.0" wide by 2.0" long. The functions and slope of the elevated surface remain the same as the previous standard.
-
ASTM F 1487
Free-standing Climber - The fall height of free-standing climbers such as geodesic domes and free standing climbing walls is the distance between the highest part of the climbing component and the protective suface below. Perviously the fall height had not been specified.
