Who did Southerners attack for the tariff of 1828?
Despite Martin Van Buren and the Jacksonians playing the major role in enacting the tariff, they blamed Adams because of his support of higher tariffs and his position on native American land rights in Georgia and other Southern states.
What happened over the treaty that had been signed between U.S. commissioners and a faction of the Creek people in 1825?
The Creek National Council declared the treaty fraudulent and therefore not binding. Adams supported the Indians' position and ordered new negotiations. Georgia's governor, George M. Troup, vowed to take the lands by force and attacked the president as a "public enemy." Resistance in Georgia and sentiment in Congress to get rid of Creek land titles caused Adams to back down.
