Mayflower Compact
a written agreement composed by the new settlers arriving at New Plymouth in November of 1620.
Virginia House of Burgesses
the first elected lower house in the legislative assembly in the New World established in the Colony of Virginia in 1619.
Puritans
a group of people who grew discontent on the Church of England and worked towards religious, moral and societal reforms.
Intolerance
To not be able to deal with something/someone etc.
Mercantilism
The idea that a colony should export more goods than it imports and that a colony should sell at higher prices and buy at lower prices.
French-Indian War
the North American phase of a war between France and Britain to control territory. (1754-63)
salutary neglect
an undocumented, though long standing British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep the American colonies obedient to Great Britain.
Thomas Paine
(January 29, 1737- June 8, 1809) An English pamphleteer, revolutionary, radical, inventor, and intellectual. Lived and worked in Britain until age 37, when he emigrated to the British American colonies, in time to participate in the American Revolution.
Patriot
one who loves and defends his or he country.
Whigs
an 18th and 19th century political party in Britain, that was opposed to the Tories, and became the Liberal party.
Tories
the name given to those in England who strongly supported the views of King George III and Parliament.
Loylist
the colonists who remained loyal to Great Britain during the American Revolution.
