analogy
a point-by-point comparison of two similar things to clarify the less familar of the two.
ballad
poem that tells a story and is meant to be sung or recited
refrain
a repeated sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines
personification
the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea
stanza
grouping of two or more lines. It is comparable to a paragraph in prose. Each __________ may have the same numbers of lines or numbers of varying lines
extended metaphor
figure of speech comparing two essentially unlike things at some length. It may demonstrate a series of metaphors, respecting different aspects of a situation.
onomatopoeia
the use of words whose sounds suggest their meanings. Ex. "bang bang"

person, place, or object standing for something beyond itself
alliteration
also know as a "tongue twister", it is a repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of words, writers use this for emphasis and to give writing a musical quality.

visualizing with the reader's five senses
limerick
a short, funny poem made up of five lines. It usually has a rhyme scheme, composed of two rhyming couplets followed by a fifth line that rhymes with the first couplet
